Sounds like you’re already doing everything you could do to get the best possible image from a 640×480 frame of video. The only way to get a better still image from your GL2 is to use the supplied memory card. You could quickly switch over to the card, take your shot and switch back to video.

If you could be a little more forthcoming about your system specs, that would be a huge help in trying to diagnose your problem. Type of Mac, type of media drives (and how full are they) how much RAM, OS version, Quicktime version, FCP version, etc. There is no cut and dried answer to your problem without knowing what your system is.
This is just a wild guess: if you’re trying to play back a clip from the timeline that has unrendered effects applied, try going to Safe RT and rendering first before playback.

Then don’t do it that way. Export a Quicktime self-contained or reference movie from FCP, open it in QT, set your web parameters then export a web-size version. Easy as cake.

With your clip loaded into the viewer click the motion tab. Under the header “Basic Motion” you’ll see the adjustments for scale, rotation, center and anchor point. Make sure everything is set to even numbers, especially the values controlling the x & y axis in the rotation column.

Sounds like you’re trying to capture 24P and not standard 60i. BTW, you never mentioned your source tape frame rate, only what your capture frame rate is set to. More info please.

Logically, there is no reason to think otherwise. Probably the exact the same setup as the NTSC version.

Taken from the XL2 owners’ manual:
“If you focus manually then leave the camcorder with the power turned on, you may lose focus on your subject. This possible slight shift in focus is due to a rise in temperature in the camcorder interior and lens. Check the focus before resuming shooting.”
My XL1S used to be very ‘autofocus sensitive’. I sold it and bought an XL2 which is much better in that regard i.e. it doesn’t lose autofocus for me at all unless you’re shooting in very low light, then most other camcorders will do the same thing.

Not that I know what I’m talking about but, doesn’t QT Pro have Sorenson Squeeze 3 built in? I’ve used that quite a bit for DV NTSC. I know it’s not Sorenson 4 but could you not use QT to export your .mov file using the v.3 codec, Chirs? I don’t know (even after reading that thread from a few days ago) what your final output is for, but I just thought I’d throw the idea out there. Perahps I’m just wasting everybody’s time, too 🙂
