My point wasn’t whether or not Apple would honour their warranty because I added third party RAM or hard drives after puchase. I chose to have Apple install 8 gigs of RAM and 4 750 gig drives before purchase because if the extra RAM or the hard drives go south I don’t have to call the RAM or hard drive makers to get things fixed. I just have to call Apple.

Custom presets are where you modify the camera’s picture settings to obtain a certain “look” e.g. to make the video appear more film-like.
Black stretch will affect how black the blacks get. The darker you make the blacks the less detail you’ll have in the shadows of your picture but you’ll gain desirable contrast. Making the blacks lighter reveals more shadow detail but you lose contrast. Knee does the same thing but it only affects the highlights. Black stretch, knee, pedestal, gamma settings etc, all allow you to adjust your picture for different shooting conditions.
A quick Google search for the above terms will bring lots of results.
Custom keys are used for things like putting the camera into record stop mode and for turning on and off the zebra bars, etc. I use my two custom keys all the time and they’re set for the above functiions.

Michael,
I went the other way and ordered my 4 core Mac with everything extra right from Apple, including extended warranty. I figured if anything screws up it’s only one phone call instead of one to the RAM supplier, one to the HD supplier etc.

About 2 months. No issues here.
This is a pretty fast GPU and if you’re considering running the updaded pro apps included with Final Cut Studio 2, Apple’s website is (highly) recommending that the X1900XT be used for graphic intensive programs like Motion 3 and Color.

Yep, Panasonic Master Series are good and that’s what I’m using for all my cameras. The Sony Master Series are also generally accepted as being just as good, although I haven’t had the opportunity to use them yet.
You’re probably better off using the 63 min. tapes as opposed to the 83s. From personal experience my XL2 doesn’t like the 83’s much because they’re thinner and cause the occasional picture glitch. So, if the XL-H1 uses the same tape transport mechanism this might be something to consider.

Flourescent lighting will appear to “pulse” in a display, much the same as trying to capture a computer display without the “rolling picture” effect. When working with this lighting try changing shutter speed to offset the 60Khz electrical pulsing in NTSC land or 50Khz in PAL land. If the flickering in the LCD display is still present under normal (no flourescents) indoor lighting, the electrical pulsing may still be present but not nearly as obvious. You can still try changing shutter speed to keep the effect to a minimum. Personally I haven’t noticed this using incandescent lighting, only with flourescents.
As a futher note: when shooting under mixed lighting conditions it’s always preferable to use the man. w/balance setting and make sure the mixed light sources are all reflecting off your whiteboard. Using the auto w/b setting in mixed lighting conditions will certainly confuse your camera.

Well, no actually when you get your new FCS2 box and insert the first install disc you’ll be prompted to type in the serial number for FCS2. Once that’s done, if your new FCS2 is an upgrade from FCS1 then you’ll be prompted to type your FCS1 serial number before the install process can begin. If you’ve bought a brand new FCS2 and not an upgrade then you’ll just be prompted once for the new serial number.
Hope that’s not too confusing.

As it stands right now the barefeats test is coming in at roughly 40% faster for the 8 core over the 4 core. This will probably change with Leopard. All I can say is that my 4 core is a heck of a lot faster than my 2.7 G5.
