Okay. Good luck with the rebuild. I’ll watch this thread for awhile just to see if you report back on your progress. I’d be interested in knowing what the problem(s) turn out to be.

So I guess they’re not geniuses after all, huh? So much for truth in advertising. When you’ve finished building and saving your disk image to your hard drive you can always test the image using Apple’s DVD Player app before you actually burn to DVD. Using the DVD Player app instead of the Simulator within DVDSP may reveal the problems you were talking about.
If I was to hazard a guess, I don’t think that creating a disk image is going to solve your troubles with this project, especially if you can burn previous projects to physical DVDs and have them play back in consumer DVD players without issue. I think there might be a piece of corrupt media in there somewhere that’s causing trouble. But I may be wrong and using the disk image workpath may solve it. Hope so.

I’ve saved all my DVDSP projects as disk images for awhile now and I can’t remember the last time I burned a coaster.

No clues, as in ‘I don’t have a fix’ but I do have a work-around because it was happening to me with FCP 5.0.4 on my 2.7 G5. Instead of choosing to capture all offline clips in the bin, instead highlight all the clips within that bin that you want to capture and then choose “capture selected clips.”
Worked for me every time.

It’s sounds like there’s something funky going on within DVDSP. You might try trashing the program preference file. The path is:
Macintosh HD>Users>”yourname”>Library>Preferences>com.apple.dvdstudiopro.plist
DVDSP will create a new pref. file when you start the program again. But before you use the burn function within DVDSP I would instead create a disc image and then try another project burn using Apple’s Disc Utility. It’s generally accepted that burning from a disc image is more reliable than burning within DVDSP.

I just watched a short demo on Episode Pro and this program actually has a Play Station Portable compression preset. So I’m assuming that you do your edit the same as anything else in FCP but when you’re done you just port your self-contained or reference .mov over to Episode and choose the psp preset. Episode Pro is brought to you by the good folks at FlipForMac and with that program you can even have those presets available in Apple’s Compressor if you tell Compressor where to find them first. Perhaps Episode Pro will have that same feature.

I’ve had two versions of FCP on the same computer in the past and didn’t really see any issues but generally it’s recommended to get rid of any previous version (totally) before loading up another one. Come to think of it, the reason I probably didn’t have any issues was because I had version 1 running in OS9 and version 4.5 running in OSX.

When it comes time to capture also be sure to change your FCP device control preset in Audio/Video Settings to: HDV Firewire 25 fps.
Also keep in mind that at present there is no tape deck on the market that you can use to transfer tapes shot in the Canon 24F, 25F and 30F recording modes, so you’ll have to use the XL H1 for this purpose. A lot of people are starting to use the Canon HV20 Palmcorder for this little job. They’re inexpensive and will play back any recording format from any of the Canon HDV cameras. On the other hand if you have Canon HDV footage shot in 1080i then any HDV deck will do.

That’s correct. FCP has had the support for the Canon HDV codec since version 5.1.2. You should be good to go using the easy setup you mentioned. For the best info concerning capturing from HDV Canon cameras, you’ll get accurate and timely answers in the Final Cut Pro Forum here at the COW.
