Rumor has it that the next FCP update v.6.0.2 will have the ability to transfer the EX files right from the log and capture window.

What you can do now:

The PMW EX1 will ship with a software package that contains clip browser software for both Mac and PC. This will allow you to browse and copy clips from the camera to a hard drive.

Also included in the software package is the transfer plugin for FCP. You can mount either the camera or just the memory card in the Finder directly and then import your clips into FCP that way.

The log and transfer and proxie browsing software is also available as a free download at the Sony web site.

Your original post asked about Seagate drives. I ordered my newest Mac with 4 750 gig drives and Apple chose to install Seagates. Initially I was a bit miffed because I thought it would come with Hitachi drives, but so far the Seagates have been working fine. One is the startup/app. drive and I have the other 3 raided together in RAID 0. So far so good. I bought the new Mac Pro in the early spring and it’s on for several hours a day.

I do this all the time in FCP. Here’s what I do and there are no loss of sync issues afterwards:

Make a copy of your 48K sequence preset in the Audio/Video Settings menu. Then choose “edit”. In Quicktime Audio Settings at the bottom choose 32.000 kHz 16 bit 2-chan in the format drop down menu. In order to get the audio bit rate down to 12 you need to go to Audio/Video Settings>A/V Devices. Choose 4 channels instead of 2 and that will allow you to change to 12 bit and also set the sample rate to 32 Khz in that dialogue box as well. Name your new capture preset DV NTSC 12bit 32Khz. Then you’ll be able to access that preset in the log and capture window.

If you have FCP 6 you can drop your widescreen footage into a full screen timeline. You will be prompted to choose whether or not you want the timline to now conform to your 16:9 footage or remain as a 4:3 sequence. Choose to leave the timeline as 4:3 and your widescreen footage will become “center-punched”, leaving you with a full screen version. No other adjustments will be necessary.

I was going to suggest that you check for inordinately high tacheon (tack-ee-on) emissions in your area, but you’ve obviously done your research.

Thanks for the news about the Flash XDR recorder. Once I have the time to read through everything concerning this (new) technology I’ll be better equiped to make a decision on whether it makes sense for a small shop like ours. Preliminary reading however, has my mind racing at the possibilities. It certainly makes sense if we start shooting XDCAM.

Now back to my DVD authoring and burning. Customers are waiting 🙂

I try to keep my hands out of the tape transport area as much as possible. I’ve never heard of the home remedies you’ve mentioned. I’m a cameraperson/editor, not a mechanic. If you don’t trust Canon to repair your GL2 then take it to an authorized repair facility in your area. Personally I’ve had good luck with sending things to Canon and having a proper repair done right the first time. Not too happy about the length of time it takes, though. At least not in my part of the world.
