I’d keep a close eye out for this author’s next article. Simon says (don’t start) at the bottom of this article (link below) that he’s going to explore the EX-to-NLE workflow.

I wan’t going to jump in on this thread but……..why not just ask the folks who use the big boy XDCAMs and see what their thoughts are with regard to the SD version of anything they’ve down-converted from HD? They may already know that an SDI downconvert is better/the same/worse as a software down-conversion.
As far as my idea for workflow goes – the next update of FCP will apparently have the ability to capture XDCAM right from the capture window. I would then capture HD and edit in an XDCAM HD timeline, render and output an HD master to a QT movie. Just about everything I do goes to SD DVD right now, so I would use Compressor to make a 16:9 SD MPEG2 version for DVD Studio Pro. Done like dinner (I hope).

Your concerns are quite valid but you’ll have to wait until folks like the forum moderator or Todd from Fantastic Plastic show up. They have more experience using optical adapters than I. I know that Todd uses a mini35 adapter on his XL-H1 with cine-style lenses, so he may be able to give you some insight to determine the 35mm equivalent of what you’re looking for.
I’ve never used the EF adapter or different lenses on my XL2. I just know that certain parts are required to do what you want.

Thanks for your feedback on the EX. I guess I’ll have to do some wrist strengthening exercises to prepare. Thankfully, most of my shooting is done from a shoulder brace or a tripod. But it’s good to know in advance about the balance issue. Perhaps having that optional heavy looking Sony wide angle lens on the front of the EX will help.

Take it in for service. The same thing happened to my GL2 a few months ago and Canon ended up replacing parts in the tape transport after over 4 years of use. Keep in mind that if you used a head cleaning cassette on a regular basis instead of taking the camera in for cleaning at regular intervals, Canon Repair may also tell you the heads need replacing now as well. Head cleaning cassettes act like sandpapaer and will wear out your heads prematurely if you don’t use them sparingly.

I belong to a videographers’ association in my area and it would seem that your viewpoints and projected time tables are theirs as well. I guess it doesn’t matter where in North America one lives. I hadn’t thought about Apple TV, however. I’ll have to bring up that idea at the next meeting at the end of the month. Don’t worry, I’ll give you full credit. Even if half of our membership uses PCs Apple TV still makes sense for a high end client. At least it’s another option to think about.
I just wish Apple Inc. fully supported Blu-Ray right now.

Agree totally with that. What do you think, Craig? Another 1-2 years before HD delivery finally outstrips SD? *My crystal ball is around here somewhere. I just saw it*
Most of our clients are newlyweds. Our most recent trade show was just last week and only one couple out of the 80 some-odd that we talked to said they now have a high def TV and a Blu-Ray player.
