The other day I downloaded the whole 5D movie from the Canon web site. I should have kept it because I just went back to the link and the movie isn’t available at the moment because:
“Due to high demand of video clips we have exceeded our download capacity.”
But here is the original link anyway because you can still get frame grabs from the movie.

I really don’t know what to make of this emerging technology. I talked to the owner of a local still camera shop the other day and he called this new capability of the EOS 5D “blasphemy.” So it’s going to take awhile for content creators to accept that the line between still cameras and motion picture cameras is getting very blurry, indeed.
As far as single sensors are concerned, I guess as improvement in chip technology moves forward it may become less of an issue as to whether or not you own a 3 chip or a single large chip camera. The RED ONE is a perfect example of a single CMOS camera that has stellar picture quality with incredibly shallow DOF because the sensor is so big. Time will tell.

Download and install Sony’s free Clip Browser software on all your machines. The app. is cross-platform and will take the EX native MP4 files and allow anyone to see and hear the clips without requiring any additional software. This would be perfect for your NAS system.

Both of the monitors you’ve mentioned are good and I personally would go with either one. If you’re considering using an MXO2 as well, any other monitor choices would be dependent on which ones are officially supported by Matrox for use with the MXO2. That info is most likely available at their web site. Minimum monitor size would be the Apple 23″ so you can see the full raster 1920×1080 image.

Are you looking for a widescreen SD version of your project or a full screen 4:3 version?

I just did a little test where I made a clip offline in the Browser (which made it also offline in the sequence) then using the “Reconnect Media” command I reconnected the same clip from a backup hard drive. Worked like a charm, so I’m not sure why you can’t do it at your end. Keep in mind that the clip you’re reconnecting to has to be named exactly the same as the offline clip, but it doesn’t seem to matter that it’s on another hard drive.

I’d be getting someone to do a hardware test. Sounds like there’s something amiss with that processor.

Unless you have a PCIe FW 800 card (I’m assuming you don’t) then the 400 and 800 connections share the same BUS. Try disconnecting everything other than the drive you’re editing with and see if that solves it. Sometimes FW drives sharing the same single BUS and especially cameras and decks will fight for control of the interface and cause major headaches. That’s why they make FW cards with multiple connections because it gives you another FW bus independent of the computer’s own FW setup.
If this doesn’t work it could be a number of things, from a bad RAM stick, A KONA board configuration problem, etc. It becomes a process of elimination. The fact that it also happens with your internal SATA 3 drive array setup is also cause for concern.
Have you ever tried trashing the FCP preference files? Just a thought.
