September 9, 2013 at 7:12 pm in reply to: Experience with ESXS Chinese cards ?

Alen, I’ve been using XDCAM EX cameras since December 2007 and I’ve never heard of these cards before, so I’m not sure how much luck you’re going to have getting an answer.

If you’re considering buying such a replacement for either the Sony SxS Pro or SxS-1 cards I would highly recommend doing your own (detailed) research starting with a Google search on the name first before committing your money to something that’s probably sketchy at best. If these cards have been around for a while you can bet that Sony also knows about them and I’m sure somebody there would be willing to give you some info. Sony’s cards may be comparatively pricey but you can rely on them and Sony will help you out should anything should go wrong with any of their cards.

SxS-1 cards are good for 10,000 cycles.
SxS Pro cards are good for 100,000 cycles.

    And also, what Clint said.

Thanks for your input, Joshua, and for the link to the Youtube tutorial. Although I realize that AE is a ‘go to’ app for this sort of thing I’m not involved enough in graphic design to justify the expense. I do have Marquee, however, which is part of Avid MC/Symphony and is quite capable of doing this little task. I just have to figure out how to do it. I look forward to watching your tutorial recommendation which may help me to understand the basic principles involved.

    Cheers,

That’s because Apple officially stopped supporting FCP7 over 3 years ago. Even though FCP7 is “dead” lots of folks, including me, still use it.

If you’re referring to the status displayed in the camera’s viewfinder, my cameras always say the same thing, even when connected with my Mac. You can assume that the camera is fully connected and transferring data normally.

Sony should consider adding more text to the same screen that says “just checking to see if you’re awake.”

SxS memory cards use FAT32 formatting. Not NTFS (WIndows) and not Mac OS Extended. Even if you did format the card using FAT32 on your computer a lot of times an EX camera just doesn’t like anything formatting the media except the camera itself. So format the card again using the camera and then use it to transfer your media.

[Michael Slowe] “I have heard it said that Apple will eventually abandon the codec and it will be unplayable on future kit. Is this likely?”

I’ve not heard of any such rumour but having said that I suspect that nothing is forever. When the next great codec comes along and today’s digital media recipes are in danger of becoming extinct it’s in everyone’s best interests to transcode to the most recent codec miracle before the ability to do so also becomes extinct.

Bob, here’s a piece I did several months ago. In it I talk about each flavour of ProRes and their various uses.
To do bulk transcoding just use Compressor to change from XDCAM to ProRes. It’s pretty easy to set up with a preset and will work in the back ground while you’re doing other tasks such as setting up a new project in FCP7.

[Bob Cole] “what do you think of just doing a routine transcode on ingest, into the most edit-friendly format (and what would that format be)?”

The least taxing on processor speed would be ProRes 422 on the Mac and DNxHD (Avid codec) on a Windows PC. These days ProRes 422 is also agnostic, as Windows machines can work with that just as easily and Macs can. The reason your older Macs have issues with XDCAM is because it’s a Long GOP codec and very processor intensive. With your older Macs transcoding before editing is the way to go.

July 17, 2013 at 7:48 pm in reply to: Sony PMW-200

[Neil Hynes] “what about simply plugging in the usb, dragging the folders to your external hard drive and away you go !?? Is there a problem with that because that’s what I’ve been doing!”

The difference is that the drag-drop method is just a simple copy from A to B without any error checking to make sure that everything is copied correctly. With the Content Browser method you can choose to have error checking active. The program will alert you to any discrepancies whereas copying at the FInder level will not. Your choice.

What Sony also doesn’t elaborate on are the differences between SxS Pro Memory and SxS-1 memory. They both will record just fine except the dash one memory is good for 10,000 cycles and the Pro version is good for 10 times that amount. If interested there’s more info on this here:

[Roger Bansemer] “The same thing happens when I toggle the Gain switch. I get the message “cannot proceed””

Go to the DIRECT menu in the OTHERS menu and switch from ALL to PART. This will give you control of your camera’s switches and banish the “cannot proceed” warning. If you type “cannot proceed” into this forum’s search field you will find a wealth of information related to your issues. The forum search field should really be called the “Shining Path To Enlightenment.”
