In order for the EX codecs to be accessible in FCP 6.0.2 you also must have at least Quicktime v.7.3.1 and Mac OS 10.4.11. If you meet these minimum requirements on your second machine then the EX codecs should be available in the Easy Setups window.

Copy the BPAV folder in its entirety over to a hard drive. Put the copied BPAV folder into another folder. Name your folder whatever you want. Start Clip Browser and navigate to your named folder. Clip Browser should see the BPAV folder inside and display the clip thumbnails. See if you can access your problem clips now and import them.
If you’re on a Mac platform you can also try importing your clips using Sony’s Transfer Tool app. Anyway, see how things go. Sometimes the EX1 will find a directory error on a card and ask if you want to “restore” the card. Did this prompt come up on your EX at all? Restoring does not reformat the card or touch the actual clips but instead will fix possible directory issues. But before you start messing with the card it’s advisable to back up the card’s BPAV folder as I’ve outlined above.
If you’re successful in retrieving the problem clips then use your camera to reformat the card, rather than just emptying it. This will help to avoid a similar problem in the future.

I want back in the poster’s history and it looks like Frank’s using Vegas, which means a PC platform. I don’t think there’s a Mac version, is there? That’s why I never answered the post because I don’t have a clue about Vegas.

Absolutely, although most of our clients are using post houses that have not started down the shining path of tapeless acquisition yet. They’re still stuck in Mini-DV and DigiBeta land, so we apprach each project by first finding out what they can edit with and end up cross converting to a more widely used format. We put that on a FAT32 formatted USB hard drive (usually on site) and build the cost of the drive into our price.

Hi Tim,
Thanks for the reply and for taking the time to post a bit of a background on how the magazine article came to be what it is. It’s this type of article that puts CC Magazine in a class by itself. As for the Pushing Daises show itself, perhaps those who finance it will be able to find another network, especially if it wins more accolades in the meantime. As for myself, it shows up here in the great white north once a week on one of the HD channels. We’ve now got our PVR set up to automatically record it.

I don’t believe there is a default setting for audio. Whether the audio comes in as a stereo pair or two mono tracks depends entirely on how the audio (along with the video) was captured in the log and capture window. In that window if the two circles are linked then you’re telling FCP to capture as a stereo pair. If the circles are not linked then it’s dual mono.
As for your other issue of audio becoming unlinked from the video when putting it into a track: make sure your track selection tabs are correctly attached to the tracks you want everything to go to. Then drag the clip from the browser or viewer into the canvas and choose: “over write.”
If that doesn’t solve it try trashing the FCP preference files. Usually when FCP starts behaving “poorly” most folks will trash the preferences and then have another go at it. Other than that I can’t think of anything else at the moment that would cause this to happen. If the video and audio were captured together then they should stay linked when dropped into a track.

Yes. Disconnect the audio track selection buttons so that there’s a visible space between them and the selected audio tracks. Now when you drag the clip from the Viewer only the video will be inserted. Works the same for inserting only audio, too. Then you just disconnect the video track selector tab/button.
