December 19, 2008 at 9:47 amIn order for the EX codecs to be accessible in FCP 6.0.2 you also must have at least Quicktime v.7.3.1 and Mac OS 10.4.11. If you meet these minimum requirements on your second machine then the EX codecs should be available in the Easy Setups window.

December 19, 2008 at 10:07 amThe codecs should be included in the XDCAM Transfer software – it’s a free download from your local Sony website. Current version is 2.8 I think…

December 19, 2008 at 11:18 amHey Stuart, actually it’s a quite commonly held misconception. The Apple Quicktime codecs for XDCAM HD/EX support are only distributed as part of FCP (and are contained within the AppleHDVCodec.component bundle). They are not distributed as part of Sony’s XDCAM Transfer application install (or any of their other apps).
Ray, if you do need playback support for HDV/XDCAM HD/EX quicktime movie’s on a non FCP mac (or on a PC) then you can get away with just buying and installing the Calibrated Q XD Decode codec bundle from Calibrated Software.

Are you sure about this? I’m sure I’ve run the XDCAM Transfer on a machine without FCP – and I thought I was able to view the clips…

December 19, 2008 at 12:23 pmAbsolutely. You may have viewed the proxies but not the Hi Res XDCAM HD / 422 / EX unless you had FCP installed (or XD Decode) … of course if you were on that occasion working in an XDCAM SD format, or more specifically if it was DVCAM, then I dare say you’d have gotten away with it without FCP.
Go ahead and check it out. Look in XDCAM Transfer > Preferences >> General tab >> Codecs … you can choose to import “even if the appropriate codecs are not installed” which of course would never be the case if those codecs were installed along with the app itself. You can also look under the Help menu > Check for Installed Components.. and it will list, amongst other things, what codecs you have installed … select each codec in turn and it will tell you exactly which version of FCP you need to have installed for full support of viewing and editing in that codec.
Hope thats illuminating 🙂

December 19, 2008 at 12:32 pmI am at 10.5.2 on intel mac pro. When I do all updates except OSX 10.5.6 I get the pro app update 2007-1. Then there is a second round after this update from apple to update everthing in FCS except FCP which stays at 6.00. I downloaded a torrent with FCP 6.0.2 update and it installed all the fcpre files for FCP but hen I start the XDCAM transfer 2.7 or 2.8 it says XDCAM EX codecs missing and I get the white screen when playing file. I also found that the pro app update 2008-1 from a google search and it is still compatable with 10.5.2 (Apple.com website html page nut click download and you are redirected to the latest downloads) but only pro app update 2008-5 is allowed and it requires 10.5.5. I have a different machine that has it all working but when I try to find the component files and copy them it doest work. not available in finder I resort to terminal and SUDO and I can find the AppleHDV.component file but I cant seem to copy it. Its under the .app directory which you cant see in finder. It has the bit set for directory (ls -l) but when you cd to it is says invalid directory.
Does anyone know how to copy a component from one machine to another?

December 19, 2008 at 12:42 pmRay you’re looking in the wrong place … its a quicktime component and is installed in the quicktime folder within the the root level library folder
ie /Library/Quicktime/AppleHDVCodec.componentIf you are still having trouble then email me (the address is in my profile)

December 22, 2008 at 11:53 amThanks Andy, I wasn’t aware of the limits of the XDCAM Browser! I’ll have to bear it in mind for the future…
