“i cant find an 8.5mbps option within the mpeg section”

    look in CUSTOM ..
select constant bit rate and type in the 8,500,000 bit rate ..

  • .avi and .mov i beleive is a wrapper and there are many different kinds of .mov & .avi codec’s …
not all .avi’s ( i don’t know of any that play without a conversion) ) will play in FCP just like not all .mov created in FCP play on a PC … and not all .mov created on a PC will play in FCP …
in my experience render uncompressed QT in Vegas ( using either none or animation codec) will play in FCP = any other QT codec is about 80%+ it will not play in FCP without a conversion on the Mac end …
when i render on a PC using DVCpro codec (.mov) it doesn’t play back on mac = got me ….
rendering using sony MXF then it depends on the Mac editor system if they have a sony MXF reader ..
you need to find a codec that works on both your PC and on the FCP system … if you use Sheer codec then the mac needs the sheer reader ( sheer codec does not come as standard with either PC/mac OS and not all of the different sheer configurations work on both the mac/pc)
bottom line is do some test to see what works best and in your budget ( also consider time if Mac need to convert) vs. buying codec, plugin’s …

  • have had success from V9 (3 hr rough cut project) to FCP using autoduck pro import FCP 2.0 ..
export from vegas as AAF (choose avid) .. then open AAF using autoduck
now it comes down to will the media open in FCP ?
you might have to do converting …

we had dv, p2, HDV, hd .. we did convert many to sony mxf HD 4:2:2 then replaced the original media in V9 with the MXF ..

to make a long story short the AAF using autoduck worked and the project is now being edited in FCP ..
not all transitions came thru correctly but they did show up as something .. few times the sync audio didn’t come thru in some places = went back into V9 and LOCKED audio to TL and then it came thru … ended up exporting the 3hr TL in 4 sections …

in past we were rendering edited Media out of Vegas using sony MXF HD codec’s … then took those over to FCP to finish editing …
we use MacDrive (on PC) to get past Mac/PC hard drive issues & FAT 32 issues ..

June 4, 2010 at 11:20 pm in reply to: Vegas 64 on XP 64, Vista, or 7

i have a dell 420 .. i have vista home 64bit & win7 64bit pro on it … i prefer win 7 but usb & firewire are SLOW ( snail pace) .. vista 64 the USB works but firewire is about 1/2 speed of USB ..

there is a RAM limitation on HOME versions ( both vista & win7) i don’t recall what the max ram is but the Pro version can use more ram … 8 gigs is no problem for the home ( it might be 16gig max on home ??) …

i have both Vegas 32bit & 64 bit loaded on both OS ..
why? because not all filters are available in the 64bit Vegas ..
so at anytime i can switch from 64bit vegas to 32 bit vegas or vice versa … IMO windows 7 is more solid then vista .. but every now and then i need firewire so i use Vista ( 1394 is slow but win 7 1394 on this dell is almost not working ) there is a patch out there for win7 & 1394 but it didn’t work on my dell ( dell does not recommend win7 on the 420) …

IMO XP has a very easy SHARE .. you share a drive and everything on that drive is available … vista share = can’t get it to work = got me … win7 share – well easier then vista BUT i’ve tried sharing a drive and nobody can see it = i have to share each folder on the drive to get them to show up ..so IMO XP is by far the best for sharing drives …

June 14, 2009 at 5:45 pm in reply to: Sony Pro 9 Not Enough Memory Error On Render

been having the problems rendering Red 4k clips …

Vegas support said to try .. set preview Ram to 0 ( zero ) and rendering threads to 1 …
on 64bit Vista, 8 gig ram, 6600 quad core
V9 32bit pops up the memory error .. 64bit V9 would just crash .. chnaged those settings and both completed the 5 min render that i was having the error …

November 10, 2008 at 6:05 pm in reply to: Apple ProRes 422 Editing

Vegas will edit ProRes clips …1920×1080 HD (HQ) clips play back in RT in Vegas Preview 1/2 size ( quad core 6600 )

few weeks ago i was given some ProRes clips that would NOT open in vegas ..based on Vegas explorer it didn’t know the spec’s on the video stream but had the audio as 16bit/48k then stated 24bit big ? = audio would open but no video … those clips were captured from HDcam deck to AJA i/o HD (i was told there are many -many different capture choices in AJA menu – do not know what they choose to capture these clips) … since then i have received more clips captured using the AJA and they work ( they do not have the 24bit in audio spec’s).

if you get clips on a Mac formatted drive you’ll need to get software for your PC to read the disk …

October 24, 2008 at 5:34 am in reply to: Vegas 8c & proRes

oct 23 … ok those clips did NOT work in Vegas .. not sure of exact reason ..seems to be something about 24bit audio ??

ended up using combustion to render them into something Vegas could read ( 14min clip took 14hrs to render to uncompressed AVI ) ..

today got some more 1920×1080 HQ pro res clips ( 16bit audio) and they all work in V7 & V8 …

September 4, 2007 at 3:38 pm in reply to: V1U 24p vs. 30p Documentary Project

editing 30p is no different then 60i …
    i prefer the look of 30p over 60i …
    i’ve shot 2 doc’s in 30p …
if you set up your editing preferences as interlace then all titles , panning frame, etc are create in interlace over progressive clip ..
if you set up project as progressive then those elements are created progressively …

i usually prefer moving titles to be interlace over images …

you might do a few test using 30p to see what you think …

big downside to 30p – it looks TERRIBLE if you need to make a film out …

February 18, 2007 at 6:09 am in reply to: if it was your money which camera would you buy?

IMO if RED delivers at NAB – the pricing structure on existing and future camera’s will change ( prices will drop)… RED might not the best camera for your clients but it will have a affect on all camera’s at NAB ( which i think is good for buyers) …

November 29, 2006 at 11:22 pm in reply to: Network render question: Vegas 7 and Vegas 6

using windows explorer check to make sure from each computer that you can go to the shared hard drive and transfer files back and forth ( between computer)

are you using a router or do you assign each computer a IP address ( ie: 198.100.168.001)
make sure each computer has different IP address …
RUN – type in cmd .. then type ipconfig
