I read some of your material and watched a couple of your episodes on uTube and some of Tom’s as well. I get it now, I see it as a big reference movie all linked up and will have to deal with long render times on final export. Geez, I’m just thinking about 30 or 50 clips in a sequence that contain just 20 or 30 layers each, that, I expect will take at least 3 or 4 times as long as real time.

I hope I understand this, Yea, in FCP I had to do a lot of rendering since I did all my effects in motion and when I tabbed back to FCP I had to render in order to check it. Now I don’t render anything until export of course but I didn’t know that I should clean the media cache before export, that is really good to know.

I haven’t done any lengthy projects in PPro yet but have in Encore 5.5 from existing projects in FCP. I expect export times to improve in Encore now that in CS6 it is 64 bit, but haven’t tried it yet.

That answers my question, I downloaded the Pro-res codecs to AME and will do the transcode up front since I have to do lots of speed change in my clips and need i-frame. File size is not a storage problem for me yet and planing to acquire 2 new Raid 5s later this year. I’m not real technical on all this but I want to make sure my workflow is optimized and not have to redo or change things that require workarounds down the road, hopefully. Thanks you very much.

Yes, some of my projects run an hour and a half, mostly for Blu-ray so I hope the transcode will cope with that. When it comes to AE my usual number of layers will be around 40 to 60 more or less. I have not approached that yet, I’m still getting the hang of things over there but that was my norm in Motion.

I will add my equipment after this post. I currently have a 12 core Mac Pro with 32 GB Ram and QDR 4000 coming next week. My two current external raids run around 150 to 180 Mbps but as I said I’m going to get new ones latter on. Do you think I’m on the right track? Any suggestions would be more than welcome.

Right I have backup galore knowing the risk of Raid 0 and not to mention having to import all the tape media again. I’m going to put the Global cache back on Raid 1, I wasn’t quite sure about that. I’m also mindful of backing up all my Project files as well.

I need to live with this setup for awhile because my next big expense will be a new camera, but I’m going to get the Quadro 4000 per your recommendation as I have noticed AE bogging down occasionally.

Eventually I’ll have a 10TB Raid 5 on mini SAS and avoid all this work around, that should get me in position to realize the potenial of Mercury Playback (no rendering till output).

I switched over from FCP to PPr back in last September and so far so good. Just getting use to AE as well , I use lots of effects. If you don’t mind, will there be any issues with Spaces, I read somewhere that Lion didn’t have separate windows for the suite.

The video in question was on the Adobe site under FCP to CS5. It was skipped over rather quickly and just part of an overview, I don’t know exactly which one it is on among the 6, I would have to review them all again about an hour.

Thanks for your response on the revert issue, I knew it was probably there, just wasn’t sure. I also found out that SD and HDV can be imported without a capture card. The video I use now is AVCAM so I only need the Quadro 4000 to make the switch in terms of hardware.

I was thinking of going to CS 5 since the release of mercury playback and now I’ll do so especially with the discount.

I get it now. That is a relief to know, I sell most of my discs at trade shows here in the US. so I’ll only have to make one of a kind for everyone. By the way how do like Encore? The experimental discs I sent to Australia was done with Toast not a real authoring tool.

I’m finally going over to CS5 knowing Apple probably won’t come out with what I need.

I’m still a bit confused. I know all about DVDs, I send them all over the world, but now I’m switching to Blu-ray and I’m going to switch over to CS5 from FCP as well. So lets just talk HD and see if you would be so kind in responding.

You say that 25 fps is only necessary for countries that broadcast in 25 fps. OK, don’t all those countries Broadcast at 25 fps, and further aren’t their HDTV sets 25 fps. If that is the case am I correct in assuming that the BD Player will compensate for the 29.97 frame rate that I sent off.
