One thing I would do is watch the activity monitor or Menu Meters to see if any core gets pegged, apparently the QDR doesn’t like that and freezes. At least I’m hoping that is my case, I’ll only know when I get the card back.

I have all my software installed along with Cuda drivers update and don’t forget the display drivers too. Surely when I get the card all will be terrific, I’ll let you know.

Hi Brian

I’m new to AE and not real clear on the setup for Disks. This is what I have.

Boot Drive just the common cache

Raid #1 (external) Project folder and Preview Folder (Render right). and the Global Cache (500G large)

Raid #2 (external) Media All of it Video, Audio and pics.

Should I move the Global cache to another seperate Raid and do you think I should move the Project files back to my Boot Drive.

This would be huge for me I keep changing things around but I may not have it right yet. Thanks so much.

Chris, I listed the issues in an early post, you’ll have to look I don’t know how to reference to you. But

It all sounds familiar (screen freeze). it was very erratic in the beginning so there is nothing that would make sense, it came latter when the behavior was consistent. Like you it is hard to believe its the card, what, we won the lottery, it was just waiting for us to order it.

First, I had a really good Apple engineer in Austin, TX. he’d call me back after every time I had to change out the card, the first thing he had me do was disconnect everything from the CPU and pull the Power Plug, then hold the power key for 5 seconds, it discharges capacitors to the ground planes and when you plug back in the ground will drain it off. (provided your system is grounded). Something I didn’t know.

I was also fortunate he is a CS user and only works at Apple part time.

The last symptom was the system freezing after startup in about a minute, I had to restart via the power switch and I left the activity monitor on to see if only the mouse or keyboard were disengaged but the system froze CPU stuck and no R/W on disk.

The only thing I couldn’t do was move the card to different platform and see it the problem followed. I went over everything with the PNY Rep and he told me to send in the card, I would just be spinning wheels there was nothing more to do with the setup I have, but it sounds like you have other systems so you can swap out the card. I might not have been real clear, they are a complete support center anything you need to know, what card you should get for whatever platform, how it works, repair assistance for their whole lineup. No need to call anyone else, I didn’t need to do anything else for RMA they took care of it all. I don’t know anyone who does that anymore.

Yea, I’m going to send it in there is nothing left for me to do (no other platform), I just didn’t want to do that since its hard for me to believe its the card and if I get it back, well you can guess the rest. Thanks for your time Alex, I’ll let you know what happens.

I don’t know how to unistall nvidia drivers also I downloaded the driver package and cannot do a custom install and wouldn’t uninstalling the drivers affect the screen and stop everything.

I worked with Apple for quite awhile and we eventually went back to my ATI card and all was well, put the qd4 back and it all locks up after 1 minute no programs running it does it on its own. They reckon its the card but I’d like to try your recommendation first Thanks a lot..

The problem now is the CPU freezes every time I startup, after about 1 minute. I turned the activity monitor on to see if only the mouse and keyboard were disengaged but the whole thing is locked. I’v been speaking with a really good Apple rep and we are going thru a whole series of tests, I’ll let you know what we did and the results. Thanks. No heat problems.

I don’t know what I was thinking being new to PP I’m just settling in. (FCP refugee) My cache is on a Raid 0 and further, I just completed a new Comp in AE a big one and all processors were pegged at 100% and RAM was utilizing 21 to 25 GB with no dropped frames (a first) which means I think, its the best I’ll get.

Thanks for taking the time to help me get things right, I think I’ll wait on the SSD for the OS, I have other things to buy (cameras) in the meantime.

Sometimes I get carried away, always trying to make everything faster. Your right i can imagine how the AE cache would eat that baby up after reading some of the reviews on Enterprise SSD’s, some have cooling pads on them never mind the price 5X or more, so thats out for me. I should have done that first.

I haven’t used SSD’s anywhere except for the Cameras, do you think I would be alright changing my OS to a Raid zero? I do clone it every week to a bootable HD and tested it with Lion recovery, so for safety I have that covered.

To sum up if I may. it all comes down to tools and telling a story even a 30 sec. commercial. Gone are the days of DV, slow processors, graphic cards and storage, as everyone knows. Everything is more expensive not less, even though things like memory and storage have come down dramatically. just look at Tom Daigons new system he’s going to get and don’t forget to add in enterprise drives, hell I could probably buy a Mercedes. Anyway:

For old FCP users, I have to keep about 15 projects over there because they are ongoing and require updating, the penalty is retaining the rendered projects, but I only have to render changes and then export as a self contained movie which doesn’t take too long (no layers just one sequence). Further, all the tedious work I had to do in Motion, Camera scenes for instance, are all saved as presets with drop zones for all media changes, I then export one sequence again and import into PP. so it only has 1 clip to render.

I already like PP better I can see everything without having to render, big timesaver, plus I can ram preview everything in AE just like in Motion and if I wish, especally if there are a zillion layers, I can export that and get a single clip to import into PP and reduce the big crunch on final export.
