Configuration after Upgrade to CS6
I switched over fron FCP to Adobe about 4 months ago and just upgrade to CS6. I decide it was time to clean up my file system and at the same time put everything where it should be for my system. I’m not quite sure I have the best setup and would more than welcome any advice.
System. MP 12 core 32 GB RAM. Two Raid zero’s, RW about 200 Mbps. No Quadro 4000 yet.
All Project Files on Raid 1 along with Preview Folders.
All Media, Video, Pics and Audio. on Raid 2. I also put the AE Global cache file there as well.
I plan to aquire Two Raid 5 mini SAS in the future and get the Quadro 4000 then or do you think I should get it now.

I’m not a big fan of critical data on RAID 0, so I assume you’re backing projects up on a third slightly less volatile external drive or LTO tape? If you are, then great.
In terms of splitting up the preview files from the footage on the two separate raids, good choice. I would probably put the AE global cache on raid #1 if #2 holds all the media. You want to keep them pinp-ponging when it comes to massive amounts of drive access.
With the 3 drive RAID5 setup, you’ll probably see similar throughput to a 2 drive RAID0 when dealing with audio and video files. RAID5 gets a little slow with smaller writes, but it’s not like you’re running a SQL server.
In terms of what you should get now, I’d at least go for the Quadro 4000. There are some advantages to allowing the Mercury Engine to work in hardware mode; some calculations are just more optimized for the GPU. The Quadro will also aid in raytracing in After Effects if that’s your cup of tea.
You’re there I think, I would just spring for the nVidia GPU.

Right I have backup galore knowing the risk of Raid 0 and not to mention having to import all the tape media again. I’m going to put the Global cache back on Raid 1, I wasn’t quite sure about that. I’m also mindful of backing up all my Project files as well.
I need to live with this setup for awhile because my next big expense will be a new camera, but I’m going to get the Quadro 4000 per your recommendation as I have noticed AE bogging down occasionally.
Eventually I’ll have a 10TB Raid 5 on mini SAS and avoid all this work around, that should get me in position to realize the potenial of Mercury Playback (no rendering till output).
