Avid codecs, Blackmagic codecs, DV25, etc for production.

For distribution (aka just viewing) – MPEG 4/ H.264, Sorenson, etc.

It is very important. Running it allows the RAM to perform 2 (one write and one read) functions at the same time thus doubling its bandwidth. Render and overall performance will drop SIGNIFICANTLY across the board.

Half correct. ATi fully supports OpenGL and hardware overlay.

The problem lies with the implementation. NVidia and ATi have distinct way of achieving OpenGL support.

Avid decided to optimize using NVidia’s technique – including OpenGL overlay – instead of the old Windows Direct Show.

Well if you are going to use the QT movie for something, say DVD authoring, his concerns are very valid. The compression program will inherit such flaw.

The problem maybe that QT is not using the correct color space (RGB vs YUV would be my guess).

And this would have changed things….how? You’d still have bought Studio 2. You STILL not be able to capture ProRes with a non-intel.”

It is a bait and switch. It is rather silly to go through a dog and pony show about the *technical* greatness of a codec and yet fail to mention that the *technical* requirements for it. There is also the fact that probably most people buying the product DO NOT have a Intel based G5 :/

Obviously it mattered to Apple that people knows ProRes is great but only useable with Intel Macs.

Oh well… time to get the Io HD.

May 29, 2007 at 10:18 pm in reply to: Apple Prores 422 Codec dropping frames

[Shane Ross] “Well when Avid introduced the DVxHD codec, the older Avid systems couldn’t handle it. You needed a newer more powerful one that could. This isn’t new. When a powerful complex feature comes along and takes a LOT of horsepower, many older models won’t be able to handle it. That is typical.”

The older Avids could not handle it because the older Avids (Meridien) are strictly SD and hardware based. DNxHD is HD and software based.

FWIW, DNxHD can be use to capture HDV and DVC Pro HD using mediocre old PC systems with 2 GB of RAM – even PC’s older than the last PPC Macs.

However, I doubt it is about efficient coding. ProRes is probably build tuned around Intel’s SSE technology. Can Apple make it more capable in the PPC? Probably. But there is little to be gain (as in sales of the latest G5).

Yes. You must download the installer from Avid. The codec is free and cross platform. It is an ‘open’ codec.

April 21, 2007 at 8:15 am in reply to: ProRes 422 and drive speed

ProRes, having the same data rate as Avid DNxHD, is about the same speed at uncompress SD. So you will need about 20-30 MB/s per stream depending on format and bit depth.
