I need to get more RAM for my G5- running FCP 5.1.4 with on 512 MB is ridiculous, I know. So my question is how important is RAM symmetry for the G5’s running, particularly as it pertains to FCP 5 and 6? I could get two 512 MB memory modules or just one… Obviously 1536 MB of RAM is superior to just 1024 MB of RAM, but I’d been told that symmetry of RAM in the G5 was something that affected performance… Is there anybody that would know the answer to this question better than me?

    Thanks,
    Samah

Buy your RAM in Pairs of matching sticks. Your G5 is a tower I presume, and it really needs to be put in pairs of matching pieces of RAM. so two more 1 gig or 2 gig chips would be my suggestion.

Quite frankly, if you intend to run more than just FCP at the same time, and you run Motion with it, you probably should be looking at a total of 4 gigs at least.

It is very important. Running it allows the RAM to perform 2 (one write and one read) functions at the same time thus doubling its bandwidth. Render and overall performance will drop SIGNIFICANTLY across the board.
