“Sorry, I don’t think I read that, or I forgot I did. Did you send the same file that had already been opened in 5.1.3, or a previous backup that still opened on your system in 5.1.2?”

I assumed that since it would not open on another system with 5.1.2 that it would not work if I tried to go back. I was also afraid to waste more time on it and have to reinstall everything. I just figured I would be better off just getting back to it and learning from the experience.

I did notice when starting over that Magic Bullet Colorista does not work with the new version. The cut I was working on did use Colorista on every clip. I’m assuming this could be another possible cause to the problem.

Thanks everyone for your help. Unfortunately I was unable to get the project to open and spent the day reconstructing from scratch. I am almost back to the point of where I left off. Major headache, but fortunately happening on the project that it did I only lost about a day. Much of the work was AE composites and I was able to reference the last cut from a client approval DVD.

My advise and new workflow from now on will be to export projects and sequence cuts as XML backups. There is a lot more stability and ways to work with XML and it would be wise to not only backup working progress but also to archive XML with the project file. There are many solutions and ways to work with/troubleshoot an XML file but unfortunately with FCP projects it seems if there’s a problem your SOL.

It seems it would be a better option for Apple to set the auto-backups to the XML format or at least give the user the ability to choose.

    John,

I emailed the project to you. If it works, export the project as XML and email that back over. Thanks for looking into it.

it’s a pain, but 1 solution could be to export a quicktime files same as source and reimport that clip for output. If you have to many cuts/renders and your drives are not fast enough to access your clips – this will work as a temp solution.

    Wes,

Do you think going back to 5.1.2 on my system would work even if the project would not open on another system using 5.1.2? I tried sending it to a friend who has not yet updated and he was unable to open the project either.

Also, I’ve been researching this problem all night and looking into reasons projects get corrupt and one possibility could be that when logging the media using MovieLogger we created key terms based on the topics, problem may be we used commas to separate the keywords. I then created subclips from the logs. This resulted in apx 500 subclips many containing commas. Do you think the illegal character would be the reason for this problem?

Finally, is there anyway to generate an XML file from a FCP Project file? If I could could convert the project file to XML then maybe I could clean up and remove the illegal characters.

    thanks for your help.

I’m not sure how I can revert to 5.1.2 but I did send my project over to a friend who has not update to 5.1.3 and is still using 5.1.2 and he was unable to open the project as well. What really has me confused is why all of the auto save backups would also have the same problem, so it’s not simply 1 corrupt file, there is something in about that project which the new version does not like. I should also mention that it’s a rather large project with over 500 subclips created using MovieLogger and the project files is about 4MB.

February 18, 2007 at 12:26 am in reply to: Change Audio Pan of All Clips

just set the pan correctly on 1 clip and copy that clip, then select all the other clips you would like to apply that pan setting to, right click, and select paste attributes. Check the box for pan and you will apply the copied clip’s settings to all the selected clips.

I know, but it is kind of hard not to update mid-project because I always have a few projects going at once and there almost never any downtime with no projects active.

I keep project files on a separate project drive with real time backup. The project raid is separate from the media raid and system drive. Which drive should I run disk warrior on and how do you think that would help? I’ve already repaired permissions and verified that all disks are in good conditions.

Could you provide more information on what disk warrior would be fixing?

    thanks.

August 15, 2006 at 5:46 am in reply to: network rendering

I am also trying to figure this out, using AE7 Pro. I’ve got the Render Engine installed on each of the network computers, but at the collect files set AE tells me 0 multi machine renders are available. Maybe a link to a good step-by-step tutorial. I’ve searched but not much luck. Adobe’s help files are not very clear to accomplishing this.

    thanks in advance.
