    Possibilities:

Is Media Composer set to 1080i HDV in the format tab? You might have control through Firewire even if that isn’t set as the video input.

Is the deck set to output HDV over Firewire (as opposed to DV)?

Any other Firewire hardware on the system, Mojo, Adrenaline? If so, shut down the computer, disconnect the hardware, restart.

Have you confirmed playback on the deck? With a monitor connected to the deck, can you confirm playback of the tape and that the tape is HDV?

Have you tried a tape that you know worked in the past?

Wait, is this a riddle? I don’t get it.

I’d like to make a request on this post and many others like it. Give us a little info: software version, operating system, hardware, type of storage, model numbers, etc… You may not think it relevant to your problem, but perhaps it is. And in the larger scheme patterns may emerge of certain problems on specific configurations. No one of us on the Cow can have a hundred test systems but by the fact that we all share information allows us to gain insight into setups we don’t have access to. Further, a post for help that contains very little data can turn into a guessing game. If I want to play a game, I’ll invite some friends over and have them bring a 6 pack and a pizza. That is, if you cant be bothered to offer a detailed description of the problem and the situation it occurs in, why should I bother crafting a reasoned, descriptive answer.

Shimrit, your request for assistance may be genuine and honest but there are potentially thousands of configurations you could be working from. The Cow wants to help. When a problem is resolved for one it becomes a resource for us all. Unfortunately the question you posed is literally unanswerable.

Did the system drive fail and they “restored” it to a new drive? If so the chances are the application or some part of the OS is corrupt. time for a full re-install, OS and all applications.

With a newer version of Media Composer there is the possibility to have mixed resolution media in the timeline. That is, both HD and SD. For a project like this, you could just work entirely HD and then transcode the final sequence to SD if that is what is required for delivery. This way you still have an HD copy should there be a use for it down the line. I don’t think Avid makes any distinction between the media as progressive or interlace. the project choices have more to do with processing than the media format. (Something that has to be tested of course.)

Within the Avid there is the FluidMotion effect. This is pretty good at taking interlace to progressive. Simply effect any clips in the final sequence that don’t conform to the desired format.

I might be able to offer several workflow options but the right choice is driven by your particular situation and limited by what can actually be communicated in an internet forum. If you happen to be located in the New York area (with the delivery being PAL, I’ll guess no), I am available as a consultant.

Photoshop probably wont work quite like that. Chances are the resize will be interpolated from the whole frame which will mix the two interlaced fields together. This could still leave interlace artifacts. I would use After Effects.

Once the HD clip is in After Effects, interpret footage as upper field. This removes a field from the material. You are now at half resolution, but half resolution HD (similar to your Photoshop thinking). Place the clip in a 720 by 576 at 25 fps comp and scale to fit. Output with fields set to none. You now have a progressive standard def clip.

You mention working on a Meridien system and the PDW-F70. You make no mention of how you would get the material as HD for your photoshop process. Depending on your workflow, there may be other options.

The requirements for closed captioning will be defined by the distribution company or network you are creating the program for. Chances are it is part of the deliverables. The exact requirements and who pays for what should be defined by the delivery specifications and the contract.

Without a system on front of me…

I’m going to say this has to do with your audio input being set to digital? The audio engine in the Avid is trying to lock to the input. Since you puled the deck, there isn’t one.

Under the settings tab > Audio Project > Input tab:
    Change Audio input to analog.

If there is real value in the material on this tape it might be time to consider a preservation service.

There are several reasons a tape may fail. Continued attempts at playing it will often exacerbate the problems. Tape restoration companies have ways of treating the tapes, specialized playback equipment and tools to correct and stabilize whatever signal can be recovered. It unfortunately does cost a good bit.

2 companies I know of, there are others:

January 19, 2009 at 9:23 pm in reply to: Media is out of sync only in FCP

I’ll get a file which has got nothing to do with the actual content on the sequence on the edit…Has anyone experienced anything like this?”

That’s a pretty damning statement. I have had instances of video media, incorrect clips or frozen video in an output though the sequence seems fine. this is a render issue. My non-scientific guess is that Final Cut has lost track of the render files and doesn’t know what to use. Delete ALL render files and re-render.

I’ve also had audio disappear on export or output when there are several tracks in a sequence. I find it best to do an audio only export and then bring that back into a copy of the sequence for my output with video.

none of this speaks to the original post. Sync. If you look at the clips with the audio waveform, do the audio and video line up? Could this be a configuration issue with monitoring?
