I would take a look at Gnomon and Santa Monica College too.

You can also render out a 16 bit log TIFF, no Cineon Conversion. Make your own LUT in Photoshop (make a log curve in CURVES) as an adjustment layer. Paint, do work etc. Turn off the LUT and render out again.

Do some tests first. I have not done this in a few years but it always worked for me.

    cheers

I agree. Along with outdated mask tools, insufficient scaling algorithms, non-integrated color correction is a main weak point for me.

I hope the above can be addressed in the next version but I am not holding my breath.

In the Render Queue it is off by default. This is a common problem of people overlooking the checkbox in the Output Module for audio.

You need to convert to Log first then use DPX or Cineon in the Render Queue. AE doesn’t make it log for you. It just becomes a linear file in a log format.

Use the Cineon Converter or get a custom lut or curve from the output people. But my guess is Smoke is more for linear files?

Well I snooped around a little and found out this is a known bug. I guess I will work in 6.5 for these simple 4K matte paintings.

AE 7 is so much better. I also had to go back to 6.5 recently and it felt like I was wasting my time rearranging windows and navigating.

I agree with Tony. Using Photoshop for this is more time consuming and will look worse and/or bad. You simply do not have the frame by frame control in Photoshop which will reult in a flickering and obvious edge.

Algolith seems extremely pricey. There is also the option of blowing up using actions in Photoshop if blowing up is your only option at this point. Also for $500 you could get a copy of Shake (if you are on a Mac) which has quite useful scaling algorithms as well as numerous other things.

AE’s native scaling algorithms are laughable.
