Thanks Steve….I already considered that as an option. BUT (there’s always a but, isn’t there?) One of the TB ports is being used to drive a non-Apple 2nd monitor, and the other TB port will be used up in a week or two when I install an MXO2, which unfortunately doesn’t have TB pass through.

If you’re not too worried about re-rendering, drop the client’s reference movie onto your timeline. Then reference the visual TC on THAT track when making your cuts. When you make your cut, be sure to include that track too…

Try trashing your preferences. If that doesn’t work, try the crash analyzer that’s available in Digital Rebellion’s Pro Maintenance Tools. It should tell you exactly where it’s hanging up. What to do after that, it’s up to you.

You can also try Mark–>DV Start/Stop Detect. This should create a bunch of markers on your master clip. Highlight those markers, and create sub-clip.

If you’re cursor is in the upper half of the track when you let go of the clip, it will insert edit. If the cursor is in the bottom half, it will overwrite edit (and not push the other clips to the right). You can tell if you’re in the right area because the arrow will either point to the right, or point down.

Short answer: There will be no appreciable loss in video quality if you export ProRes.

Strange problem….it should only ask you for the previous version’s serial number.

manually drag the file into your timeline.
As to what the problem is, is it possible that the original file had 4 channels of audio (2 external mics + 2 stereo on-camera mic?), which then you deleted 2 of them? If so, by reconnecting it’s looking for a file with 4 tracks of audio, not the 2 tracks that your audio guy provided.
