I love the quick and dirty method….and I’m sure you realize that you can set the default encoding settings in DVD SP preferences. I try to keep mine at about 5mbps and 2 pass VBR.

  • Quick and dirty method, just use a garbage mask.

Problem you’re having with MpgSteamclip is strangely enough, broken timecode. Repair the time code (there’s a menu option for this), and you should be able to rip it just fine.

Do some research on ‘keying’, and “mattes” That should point you in the right direction for what you are trying to do. Composite modes are more for blending layers to achieve a particular look.

And yes, while FCP can do this (and sometimes reasonably well), compositing should be done in a program like After Effects.

I concur….the first thing that came to mind was it’s either the deck or the tape. Scrubbing sound means something was put down. I’m putting my money on a bad tape. Reload and try again.

  • Digital Rebellion has a Crash Analyzer that is great for pinpointing issues like this.

if they are on greenscreen, white drop shadow, with distance set to zero, softness and opacity set to 100. Duplicate and stack the layers if you need a stronger effect.

  • Is the media on the timeline actually offline (as in, it says it’s offline when you play in the canvas), or is it just showing the offline thumbnail on each clip in the sequence.

If the sequence clips are offline, reconnect them again by highlighting the clips and select reconnect.

If it’s the thumbnails, close FCP, and delete your thumbnail cache.

If you pass the video signal thru a dv deck, you do not need to lay off with i/o device. The trick though is deck control. We use a usb to rs422 converter/keyspan to control our beta deck.
