this is totally not cool and needs to be addressed, I can’t possibly move to 10 without the ability to preserve my grades.

You may have serious issues with your hardware, and/or possibly even your installation / operating system. When’s the last time it was “freshly” installed, or looked at? I’ve always found computers get slower over time, so check ALL your internal fans which if not running properly can cause your computer to overheat and perform poorly. How is it surfing the web, playing videos off YouTube or Vimeo, how about video games?

If you’re computer is just “old” than you can consider upgrading your computer to an i-series and add more memory. Another upgrade to consider is replacing your C: drive with a 500GB SSD Hard Drive. SSD is like memory basically, very fast and no moving parts. This will make your computer running Windows 7 fly.

Your last and final option if you don’t want to deal with upgrading your hardware is to transcode all your source footage files into low quality versions, sometimes called “proxies” which let your computer edit the video with a lot more ease. Later once you are done the edit, you can replace your proxy files with the originals and let your computer render out your final project.

  • It’s not true that FCP 7 does not support 4k resolution, just does not recognize the XAVC codec.

For that reason you can use Davinci or FCP X to create ProRes version files of your footage and edit in almost anything.

I wrote a guide on how to convert XAVC to ProRes for free using Davinci or FCP X here: https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/3/948791

Also if its for VFX check with your FX person because typically DPX or EXR is more preferred, in which case Davinci will do the job for you.

If you are having troubles using XAVC with Premiere, Davinci, or other software packages you can check an up to date software compatibility matrix I put together covering everything from Smoke to Avid.

    https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/3/948791

Also in my post there are a couple guides to import XAVC into Davinci and FCP X which can be useful for creating proxy files so later you can use a round-trip approach to grading your project. There is a lot of info on the web on how “round-trip” process using Premiere, FCP 7, FCP X as your NLE and through XML export use Davinci to grade your files.

In your case because you plan to do post frame scaling or punch-ins this will really tear apart the edit in Davinci (along with most dissolves, title effects, and other NLE specific timeline parameters or settings) so I recommend after your grade you swap out your proxy files for the newly graded ones coming out of Davinci. There are two ways to do this, one is physically replace your proxy files with the new ones keeping the same file name, the other is from within your NLE and by pointing to the new directory with the graded files. I prefer swaping out the proxy files for the new graded ones, just rename the actual folders so you keep the proxies incase they are needed.

I did the same thing, what I’m learning now after reading several posts is there is no way to recover the project files.

Check out this post, you would need to have done the backup from within Resolve prior to your uninstall. Let’s say even if you could find the “hidden, non-accessible, non-user manipulate-able files” (as per blackmagic design) you can not just copy them back to you new installation.

I just got screwed on this too, and lost a highly complex grade that took me 4 weeks to do which I will probably never be able to recreate.

    Quite upset about that.

    Sounds great.

If I buy Davinci 9 full from someone selling it from BMC bundle, is there a serial number I should be getting or is just having the dongle enough?

    Cheers

  • ok that’s it, it worked!

I didn’t know about the “camera raw” button/icon from within the COLOR panel.

Cheers for working through this issue with me.

  • Yes I can color the clip no problem in the color panel, etc.. but I want to need to chose the color space and gamma curve that I want as a starting point.

For example I am using many LUTs that assume log as a starting point so I need to switch from RED’s default of REDgamma to redlogfilm.

As far as I can tell this can not be changed in the COLOR panel but only on the clip setting in the media pool.

Let me know if you have better luck with non-lite version. If you chose redlogfilm for the gamma curve you should see your R3D clip go very white looking and de-saturated.

I have asked same question in RED user but no response there. :=)

  • Nah this is brand new Resolve project, import R3D to media pool then adjust clip settings, go to COLOR panel and gamma is not what I picked.

There are some global settings under PROJECT SETTINGS -> CAMERA RAW I’m going to look at as well, but so far quite stumped.

I can convert R3D to DPX and import, but really don’t want to duplicate any efforts or transcode original source data.

    🙁

  • Yep I’ve tried that, no dice. Also in the Media Pool sometimes the thumbnail reflects my gamma changes when I scroll around over it and other times it just stays with the default R3D gamma setting.

The preview clip window on the MEDIA pool page always shows my changes (redlogfilm) but once I go to COLOR it is the original gamma color again.

I tried this on MAC and PC and same thing. I’m using Resolve Lite 9 which I know can not output 4k but can open 4k no problem as I’ve been using it with 4k XAVC files from the Sony F55. I need to color some R3D files and just can’t get the clips to stay in redlogfilm.

    Anyone?
