    If you feel comfortable with using command-line tools, ffmpeg/ffmbc can readily do the conversion (and as a batch if you’re good with scripting). Both of these programs are free, but as fair warning, the latter needs to be compiled on your system before it can be used.

    If you google a bit, you can find some example command line samples for each tool.

    FCP.7 do not support 4k.
    FCPX is what you need.

    It’s not true that FCP 7 does not support 4k resolution, just does not recognize the XAVC codec.

    For that reason you can use Davinci or FCP X to create ProRes version files of your footage and edit in almost anything.

    Also if its for VFX check with your FX person because typically DPX or EXR is more preferred, in which case Davinci will do the job for you.
