That seems to be exactly what’s happening here. Normally I export a full size Quick Time from Final Cut, then drop that into Compressor to create the .m4v. THIS time, I exported from FCP into Compressor to create the .m4v. It took forever and a day, (probably creating all the green bands.) It also added some orange discoloration to some scenes. NONE of this shows on my normal monitors, only on the laptop.

Solution = Abandon Compressor for this type of work flow – . Export an Mpeg 4 from MPEG Stream Clip.

Thanks for your help and insight –

  • This problem has been resolved. Apparently in Manual – you have to set both the IRIS and the SHUTTER. Or something goes into auto mode and changes your exposure for you.

    thanks!

Solved the issue with the camera opening up automatically. Apparently in manual if you do not set BOTH the Iris AND Shutter speeds, they continue in auto mode. I was assuming they stayed where they were set unless you reset them.

Still could use a way to get blacker blacks but I think we’ll have to resort to that all-too-often-heard remark “We can fix it in Post!”

Hi Scott – I cannot locate the type of settings you mention on this camera. I can white balance, control exposure etc. Gamma and Knee are both set to standard, so is Color Matrix.

I’ve gotten the exposure about where I want it but have noticed another issue. In shooting the whiteboard, when the artist puts his hand into the shot, the white board gets brighter! I’m shooting in manual mode, manual focus, manual exposure. It’s the weirdest thing. I have – essentially a white screen with some black drawing on it. When the hand and arm goes in, something inside the camera tries to compensate for something – and the whiteboard gets brighter.

    I’ve posted a clip here: https://www.vimeo.com/26013567
It’s a password protected clip. The password is scenetest

Any thoughts you have would be appreciated…
Again – this is a JVC GY-HM100U camera. I’m going to repost this with the camera model in the subject heading in the hopes of finding someone who has the actual camera and may have experienced the same thing.

Thanks very much, Scott – I’m not too technical but I’ll see if I can find these adjustments and make per your recommendations. The whiteboard is reasonably white – but you’re right about white. There are about 10,000 of them at last count. And the black marker is not as black as a Sharpie. We may end up switching to traditional marker on paper… Just have to see what we can adjust to…

Jeff – Not an insulting question at all. No – didn’t have to. After tearing my hair out for another day I discovered my FireWire 400 link was not working. The possibility of a FW breakdown had not occurred to me as there were differences in behavior of the computer when the camera and computer were connected. Also, the FW 800 port is fine.

I switched to a laptop with working FireWire and everything worked perfectly – first time.

Thanks very much for your suggestion.

I would concur another very important aspect is having your media on a separate RAID array. I’m no expert but it seems as tho part of what’s happening happens in your CPU, part is dependent on RAM, and another part of what happens – simply swinging the files around – happens on your drive. A RAID array makes a huge difference.

  • I’ve tried dropping the setting onto the clip – but it adds the new setting, doesn’t get rid of the old setting. Seems like I should be able to drop the clips onto an empty batch without a setting being automatically assigned. Then – drop one setting onto all clips all at once.

Anyone know how to do that?

    Thanks!
