Yes. Google “Telestrator”. A proprietary piece of expensive graphics equipment for broadcast. When you google, your results will show one less expensive way to do it as well:

I also very much like the shot of Morro Rock on the banner and the confederate gray screen between pages. 🙂

Reshooting would be a bear to do but did they shoot any pics of the fence before they cranked up the trimmer? It would be easy to remove the standing grass from the fence but without another clean image to work from you have a lot of work to do. I hope the client is paying you well. 🙂

I thought about 3D and bought 3DSMax some time ago. Unfortunately my full time job as an editor doesn’t allow me time to learn that program. All professional 3D programs and their plugs-ins are a whole new career. I use 3D within my editing software (smoke) but I just don’t have the time to get up to speed on a professional 3D program. If you are young, single, and don’t have anything else to do, you probably have time to learn the software. I hope you do. I should have started 20 years ago.

[Mike Cohen] “Assuming you are working on say a 30 minute project, at what point do you create the opening credits/montage, if any. Before, after or during?
Then, what is your approach to coming up with a theme/style to the credits or montage that you create.”

One advantage to doing it afterward is adjusting the program timing in the montage. The nature of the program tells me what graphics approach to take. History sends me one way, topical sends me another way. I try to integrate the name super graphic theme as part of the overall graphic package. It doesn’t have to be pedantic, but it should relate in some way.

  • Since we are covered by PBS’ agreement with ASCAP and BMI we can use whatever with mechanical and reproduction rights. But what does copyright law say about non-commercial use of commercial music? If the end user is non-broadcast how does he report? I’m not saying a user shouldn’t pay their due because I’m a strong advocate for paying the artist’s what they’re owed. Douglas Spotted Eagle recently did a paper on copyright law. I’ll dig that out and see if it addresses the issue.

  • Google “time code calculator” and you’ll get a bunch of them as free software.

  • What you are looking for is a hexigesimal calculator that does TC as well. They are fairly easy to find in the broadcast world. Try the Broadcast Store in Florida or B&H Camera in NYC. They are more expensive than some calculators but usually less than the top end scientific ones.

  • Hi
There’s really no way to do several frames at once since they are in fact different files. What you could do is set up an action so you can open the files, add the paint daub effect, and then resave the file and close it. This will at least make it much faster, especially if the paint daub won’t move on the image sequence. HTH
