No matter what NLE you’re using, doing processing (FX) on footage always works best in the native resolution. Since you shot 29.97 it will work best to put the slo-mo on that footage and then do the pulldown again on the newly created clip.

I’m not sure exactly what you mean. If you use command/control c
to copy and command/control v to paste it back as a new layer can’t you use transform (cmnd/ctrl t) to resize it for the layer?Del

I’ve worked on finishing a documentary where the producer/editor worked for three years off and on to prepare the documentary for finishing in HD. We did the finishing in about a week using Discreet fire. Another project on local survivors of WWII (amazing how many Bataan Death March survivors live in Charlotte) took almost a year to off-line and three weeks to finish in HD. Every project has many variables: how much is B-roll for covering talking heads? How much graphic work has to be added? The less organized the producers, the longer it will take to achieve a good program because no matter how good you are at helping sort it all out, their vision has to become clear enough for you to catch it and use your skills to communicate it to the audience.
As you indicated, you need to have a serious sit-down with the client and explain the realities. Your project looks like it will take months, not days, to realize. Best of luck.

While few schools have emphasis in Broadcast Engineering, a degree in Electronic/Electrical Engineering would give the background you need to do broadcasting tasks. That being said, California State University at Long Beach has such a program and is warm and wonderful in the winter compared to Michigan.
NC State University has a good EE program and UNC Charlotte and Clemson University both have good engineering schools as well. Georgia Tech takes you farther from home with an excellent engineering school and Florida State takes you even further south. If you want to stay close to home, I would consider Purdue and Michigan-Ann Arbor or Michigan State. Virginia Tech, Maryland, MIT are other possibilities depending on your math scores and experience so far.
An ACC school is always preferable a Big 10 school because they play better basketball. 🙂 Best of luck.

The costs of living in the US depend on the geographic area in which you choose to reside. A large city such as New York, Chicago or Los Angeles has a high cost of living and a higher pay scale, although sometimes the pay scale is not sufficient to purchase a house for a few years. There are more job opportunities because of the larger population.In the mid-sized, over-reaching southeastern cities like Charlotte and Atlanta we have an constant influx of new residents who like the affordable housing and wealth of jobs. The salary range would be approximately $35,000 to $75,000. Freelance work is plentiful but you would have a difficult time getting a permanent position unless you have exceptional skills in editing and compositing.
The greatest difficulty would be establishing yourself no matter which area you choose. Getting your name known as a freelance editor of exceptional skill would take some time. Once you are known for your creativity and skill you will be selecting the work you want to do and referring or turning away other work.
Having a friend or relative already living in your new city of choice would ease the process of getting established. Americans admire success and success comes from working hard, making yourself indispensable and starting back up immediately when failure tries to stop you. Good luck on your decision.

FYI – in our documentary on local WWII veterans we used footage from the national archives showing the japanese shooting prisoners in the head on a pacific island. We rated the show PG14v and ran a warning before the show. We also didn’t modify it or stay on it very long. Seeing it made its own impact on the viewer – me included. If the purpose of the footage relates strongly to the topic and is for impact to modify action (e.g.: don’t speed in your car) I don’t think you’ll have a problem. On the other hand I’m no lawyer.

I agree that talent overrides software but disagree that high end tools are “over”. We bought “high end” because it was the only HD editing software available 7 years ago. I’ve seen FCS2 and Avid and Adobe and anything they can do Autodesk advanced systems can do faster and cleaner due to RGB 4:4:4 uncompressed processing. Chris and Trish Meyers and Aharon Rabinowitz are awesome with After Effects and their work is seen nationwide, but flame artists aren’t worried about losing their jobs to After Effects. Autodesk advanced systems are constantly improving both their toolsets and workflow and I for one wish our PBS station could afford to continue using them. The editor/artist who puts together the CBS Evening News open every night would freak out if you took away his smoke! For time critical broadcast deadlines speed is king and high end is where that’s at.
I work on Autodesk editing software that is coming to end of hardware life. Due to the extremely reduced costs of Final Cut Studio we probably will unplug our systems and replace them with Final Cut Studio. What we give up is speed and the visual effects tools tightly integrated into the software. If we had the money I would choose the faster option because deadlines tend to bite me. Producers don’t have those last few graphic files and they want to change the music or whoops, we misspelled these names on a credit roll. And it airs tonight at 8! We are making the conscious choice to go slower because of the economies involved, but those Hollywood companies who do commercials and effects work won’t be giving up their “high end” systems anytime soon. Apple is making inroads because they are improving as well, and many “high end” post facilities also use FCP in addition to their flame and smoke software but to say “high end” is over is stretching the point a bit. Call me back in five years and I’ll probably agree with you then 🙂

Do you mean a map or a globe? If it’s a globe you want, Digital Juice has two I know of in their Jump Backs. One is gold colored and the other I don’t recall but either could be color corrected to a color you want. digitaljuice.com.
If you truly mean an animated map that would show regional detail I don’t know of any royalty free maps but other COW users might be able to help with that. HTH
