Does anyone make a stopwatch from seconds and frames?
Posted by Jim Cutler on July 20, 2007 at 6:28 pmDoes anyone sell a desk timer or stopwatch that does seconds and frames? Please forgive me if this post is in the wrong forum, I thought if anyone knew it would be this group. I’m not looking for software that does time conversion, but rather a way to time some rapid fire takes on the go. thank you in advance.

July 22, 2007 at 11:55 pmHave you tried looking at the scientific calculators from HP, Casio and Texas Instruments. A while back I had a Casio calculator that did timecode calculations and conversions between different frame rates.
I know there are dedicated devices on the market for broadcast use but they’ll be expensive.

July 23, 2007 at 12:43 pmWhat you are looking for is a hexigesimal calculator that does TC as well. They are fairly easy to find in the broadcast world. Try the Broadcast Store in Florida or B&H Camera in NYC. They are more expensive than some calculators but usually less than the top end scientific ones.

July 23, 2007 at 2:13 pmAll well and good… but the origianal poster was asking about a timecode stopwatch, not calculator.
I guess that would work if one’s timecode calculator happened to have a stopwatch function… and some might I guess, but neither of the two that I have (different brands) do.
I’m not sure if an actual timecode STOPWATCH exists. Hope it does, that would be kinda neat to have.

July 23, 2007 at 5:35 pmif you have an iPod that plays video you could make a time code video clip and use that as a timecode stopwatch.

July 23, 2007 at 11:51 pmLook for an animator’s stopwatch or timer. There are also software equivalents:

July 25, 2007 at 12:52 amMarkertek used to sell these I’m pretty sure, as well as dedicated hand calcs dedicated to timecode math. If you have the reaction time to accurately work a stopwatch to the frames level, well, you’re a better man than me:-)

Me too.
In my linear editing days my lag was almost always 7 frames.
