November 28, 2018 at 11:22 am in reply to: Color stripe appears on some frames in exported videoInteresting that I had a similar export issue but with Audio, i.e. short Pop at the beginning of an audio fade. When listening on the timeline, absolutely no problem, when rendered out to H.264, a glitch at the same place every time, even after clearing render caches etc. When I reviewed the ProRes master I created, no glitch. Maybe there is some issue with H.264 encoding in Resolve.
My computer is not a Trashcan Mac, it’s a 2009 MacPro upgraded to 2010, 2 x 3.46Ghz Processors, 64Gb Ram, and an Nvidia GeForce-GTX Titan 6Gb GPU.

I can’t find that option in the edit menu.
[Edit] It’s called duplicate clip. Also, CMD+C CMD+V on a selected timeline will duplicate it.
[From my original post, below now is unrelated, but interesting to note all the same]
The only thing I could do was right click -> create timeline from clip. This creates a new timeline with a werid named clip, but looked like my original content and resembles a compound clip.
Sure enough, in the new timeline, right click and “decompose in place” expands all the original content, almost like duplicating a timeline except all the Audio channels and track names are defaulted to Video 1 Video 2 Audio 1 Audio 2 etc (or names to that effect) and any sub mixes on the original timeline are completely lost (not available on the fairlight) page.
Interestingly, to see the situation about sub mixes I went back to resolve and did the whole thing above again, and got slightly different results with naming (i.e. gobbledegook). The hard disk was in overdrive access, playback was activated but did nothing, arrow tool selected but the mouse pointer was ‘]’.
The duplicate timeline function is a fundamental workflow option, I use it all the time.
[ Still using 15.2 🙂 ]

I have been using Resolve for color grading for two years and only switched to using resolve for my editing workflow, earlier this year. I have never looked back and I use resolve for everything (almost…just need to get up to speed on fusion!). So mostly self taught, however, I recently purchased both the Resolve Editing and Colour Grading training modules from Ripple Training and have found their style and pace fit perfectly.
What I really like are those extra bits, the little gems, that you learn and I have found it fills those gaps in my knowledge. Training is a fickle thing though. It depends on what you know, what you expect, and whether you gel with the trainer’s style. I found the ripple training excellent and I look forward to future modules on fusion and also fairlight. The great thing about ripple training is that you can watch a few parts for free to get a feel for the level and whether you gel with the trainer. Furthermore, I started with their youtube videos which are really useful.

I don’t think you can to it in the timeline as such, but the media pool way of syncing the clips should get what you want, i.e., external audio synced and part of your video file, with a caveat though!!
I noticed, and reported a bug to BMD on this very issue. Refer to this post I made, and follow my own workaround.
https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/277/42231
In short, once synced correctly from the media page, and given the workaround has been done as well, you can then just duplicate the audio track of your video clip in your timeline, right click and select the source audio channel you require (if you want more than one source audio, you could just select the synced track from the drop down on clip attributes)
Let me know if you think this would be better explained by video and I will do a quick screencast / tutorial.
I assume your goal is to have synced external sound for your clips, and this method will achieve that.

This is one function that I love about Davinci Resolve as the manual lining up is great, but the auto sync can be found by going yo the media page, select both your video clip and audio clip, right click and select Auto Sync based on Waveform. This will replace the audio in your video clip (non-destructively). You can also select “based on waveform append, which will add the the new tracks. You can view the results by right clicking the video clip, clip attributes, then audio tab.
This tutorial by goats eye view runs through it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUlxpk67Qaw

Occasionally I’ve noticed a few oddities like this. I would suggest you could try deleting the render cache. Sometimes, I’ve updated clips externally (such as in After Effects), and they don’t appear to update, even if the clip is removed and re-added, but closing Resolve and re-opening does then seem to bring the clip in as expected, so I suspect there could be a few levels of cache involved.

Sorry for the delay in acknowledging your reply. I’ve scoured everywhere and got similar steps, which are all valid and helpful, but didn’t resolve my issue (no pun intended!).
I have however, overcome the problem. My soundcard was connected over firewire. This is not well supported. As soon as I switched it over to USB, all the channels are available and selectable. Davinci Resolve only really works with USB connected sound cards.
I now have a humdinger of an audio setup which allows me to do tonnes of stuff, like send reference sound to talent for ADR whilst I listen to them recording etc etc, and of course, the 5.1 setup works. Still couldn’t work out how to have just the LFE channel with no bleading into other channels, but found one solution which is to option click the pre button in the panner until it says only (couldn’t find this in the manual!). Didn’t even know you could bring up a 3D panner by option clicking the panner in the mixer!

You could press CMD-D (or I guess ctrl-D on windows) to bring up the clip duration dialog box. It’s there to change the duration, but also it shows it.

I have worked out workarounds for both the issues I have raised which I will share here for anyone else who may be experiencing either of these issues.
Issue 1:
Out of sync audio when changing source channel.Go to the original Clip in the media page, right click clip attributes->Audio tab, then change the channel type to be either 5.1 or adaptive X, which ever is more suitable, and ensure that all channels you want to be available are mapped in the channel list. Now, right click and create a new timeline from the clip. This is only necessary to force resolve into updating it’s configuration, and you can immediately remove this temporary 1 clip timeline.
That’s it! As long as the source clip has them all explicitly listed as available, then you can change them at your hearts content on the timeline and all channels will stay in sync. This allows the workflow that when you first ingest your media, set them all as mono and select a default track, enabling you to have a simple timeline. Later on you can select other channels other than the default and after applying this workaround, not only will you be able to select the track, but the metadata on the clip updates, so if your sound recordist has labelled channels nicely, it makes for a really nice editing workflow ☺
Issue 2:
Resolve crashing when you change the audio channel type. You may encounter this issue if using my resolution above! The work around for this one is a little strange. Right click your source clip, select clip-attributes->audio tab. Now, go to the existing channel setup and just click the channel type dropdown, but don’t select anything. Now click away somewhere else on the screen so the combo box closes. Now click the combo box once more, and select your desired channel type! You need to do it this way everytime you want to make a change to avoid Resolve crashing. Resolve support couldn’t replicate this issue (even though I could on two separate machines with completely different hardware), so if others experience it, I urge you to contact Black Magic support, but at least there is workaround here.
