  • Well, compressing them into MPEG2 and then using and reusing and recompressiong them will eventually, and in a pretty short eventually, give you generational-loss nightmares.

    Other than that…

  • I don’t know about the Radeon card. It could be, but I have no background with that hardware.

JPEGs are notorious, however. Try converting the JPEGs to TIFFs or PSDs. Make sure they are RGB and not CMYK.

    Hope this helps!!

Is it possibly an MPEG file?

Then you need to use a program such as MPEGStreamclip to de-mux the files.

In QT under Movie Properties, it should tell you what codec was used to create the file.

Google MPEGStreamclip. It should be a free download.

    Hope this helps!!

  • Any chance you have imported footage, like unconverted MPEG or anything like that?

Did you ever have a clip go all green-n-pink-n-pixely on you?

You’ve already done all the things that would normally be recommended to solve your problem. This makes me think that it’s a piece of corrupt media, rather than FCP doing something wonky.

If you can track down a piece of corrupt media, dollars to donuts deleting it will solve your problem. Then you just need to re-import it & convert it to a file FCP likes instead of whatever native codec it may be. I’d try exporting it out as a self-contained QT movie with the same settings as the rest off your sequence and then re-import it in. Then I’d delete the original import and get is as far away from my system as possible!! Or better yet, convert it in something else, like QT Pro or Cleaner if you’ve got it.

That is, if you an isolate the corrupt media.

Otherwise, I hope someone else has a better solution for you!

August 30, 2005 at 3:07 pm in reply to: Problems with Tutorial

Never mind. the farther I get into this, the more I realize that my manual/tutorial is for Red, but my software is Red 3GL. The reason I’m not getting the right results is that my menus are different, my windows are different….Maybe when I’m feeling better, I’d be up for tackling trying to figure out the differences…

On the same note, anyone have a recommendation for secondary tutorials for Red 3GL? I’m not opposed to spending money. This seems like an inceredibly powerful suite of tools, if only I could get a better grip on the basics. If anyone has used Artel, the Phillip Hodgetts DVD or the Chris Vadnais DVD set, please let me know what you think of them.

Or any others! I’m open to all suggestions!!

    thanks!

  • Is the drive formatted HFS+ with journaling off? You can’t just take a drive out of the box and use it with Final Cut.

What is the “Capture Now” limit set to? It ususally defaults to 30 minutes. Try changing that to 10 or 15 in your Ssytem Settings.

Capture Now is known to be flaky, as is capturing to FireWire drives. Is your deck or camera machine controlable, you may be better off using machine control.

    Hope this helps!

Look at page 55 of the manual. It gives detailed information about how to connect external audio and video monitors.

I use them grudgingly, because they do unlock some powerful timline management tools…

but I’d rather have keyboard shortcuts instead!

  • Well….

    I have a client 30 miles away with a PC. I have 2 Macs, a G5 and a PowerBook.

I connect the PB to the camera, & point the camera at my G5 running FCP. I focus in on the Canvas window. I log into iChat, she logs into AOL Instant Messenger for the PC. I initiate a Video Chat, and away we go!! I use a miniDV camera, not a webcam. The client says she gets much better results on her end when I use that camera than with “real” webcams she’s seen.

Occasionally we get dropped and we have to back up a few seconds. She has a webcam. I can see her reaction, and we usually can either talk over the telephone, or just use the VOIP within iChat/AIM.

    It works fabulously for us!!

What I don’t know is if it’s technically “secure”. That’s not an issue for us because we don’t work on sensitive projects.
