FCP 5.5
Posted by Les Kaye on August 18, 2005 at 2:08 amGuesses, speculation, pipe dreams on when it could see the light of day, as well as the same crystal ball/navel gazing on what it would/should include?
Asking this since the wait for 4.5 didn’t seem too long after 4.0.
TIA,

August 18, 2005 at 2:21 amGeeze. Let the dust settle.
But…a good solid Media Manager is my biggest wish. A nice reliable and easy way to take an offline cut to an online resolution. Avid’d is so elegant, and FCPs is co clumsey.

August 18, 2005 at 2:26 am4.5 was largely a bug-fix release with a few extras. I don’t see that happening for 5. I don’t they’d do a media manager overhaul for a point upgrade.

August 18, 2005 at 2:42 amBetter filter management. After Effects style Adjustment Layers or a way to remove specific filters from a range of clips on a timeline. Ability to turn on or off selected filters. Redo Time-Mapping, support progressive renders of motion effects in an interlaced timeline… many more.

August 18, 2005 at 3:57 amI’d vote for getting rid of those pesky “auto select” buttons. Does anyone really like them?

August 18, 2005 at 7:35 amI use them grudgingly, because they do unlock some powerful timline management tools…
but I’d rather have keyboard shortcuts instead!

August 18, 2005 at 2:21 pmI like AutoSelect. There are keyboard shortcuts. Actually that’s why I like AutoSelect.

Sorry, but I think they suck. It’s the single biggest impedement I see to working as a power editor because it counteracts natural and intuitive ways of deleting and trimming in the timeline from the keyboard. It’s just an example of too much redundancy in the GUI that is handled far more elegantly in other apps (yes Avid, but others as well). It generally trips up experienced editors coming from other systems and it sets up new editors who learn on FCP to develop poorer and slower working styles, since they never question what these do or how to use them in a more powerful manner.

August 18, 2005 at 4:59 pmMore features (on/off switch in User Prefs) for experienced editors working at an advanced level:
Clip collisions on A1 when you’re editing video over audio that has nothing to do with video. I get tired of locking down all my audio to trim a head frame. I assume this is to help some people not lose sync down the line with something, but experience editors know full well that clipping 3 frames here will slip something else 5 minutes down the road 3 frames.
And on that note, being able to see video on V1 if you’re trimming on V2 with black on either side.
And a slip feature in the trim window. Ala roll edit in Avid.
MEDIA MANGLER NEEDS A MASSIVE OVERHAUL!!!! What a piece of JUNK!
I would REALLY like to see a switch that allows you to see the timeline of a sequence loaded into the source monitor.
PRINT BINS feature!!!!!!
And I would dearly like to see some customizeable colors. Something easier on the eyes after 10 hours of editing.
