And it’s paying off already! I’ve mocked up a couple of the techniques we worked on during the seminar for a project I’m starting this week. So far, the producer loves all of them! Now it’s just a matter of letting the client decide which one she likes best!

If your client monitor is a CRT, be careful of burn in.
If you go with any kind of display, external or filter/generator, eventually it WILL burn in to a CRT monitor.
Just remember to turn it off when the client leaves!

First off, you don’t need Tiger (OS 10.4.x) to run FCP 4.5. OS 10.3.8 or 3.9 will suffice. If you don’t need Tiger, don’t buy it. Panther is enough, and probably a lot less expensive than Tiger at the moment.
However, if this is the same installation that you’re running on your G5, then the answer is yes, you have to buy a whole new seat for FCP. If you read the license, it says “may be installed on one computer at a time”. It doesn’t read “used on one computer at a time”, but “INSTALLED”. So you can’t legally install it on the PB unless you remove it from the tower.
If it is a legal second copy, then all you need are the serial numbers from the original full version and subsequent upgrades. You don’t need to actually install the old versions. The upgrade package is really a fully version, and putting in valid serial numbers as the installer asks for them is all you need to do to install the whole program.

In general, if you can export an MPEG1 file, PowerPoint will play it back, but it’s only half-size, 320×240.
Newer versions of PowerPoint LOVE Windows Media files. You can export them from FCP by purchasing a third party compression codec from popwire.com or flip4mac.com and installing it on the Mac running FCP.
But be sure to test, test, test!! Leaking RAM and embedded video files have caused many a PC to crash during a PowerPoint oresentation,
Make sure the PC is up to the task. Video in a PowerPoint presentation generally asking a lot of any PC that is more than perhaps three years old.

Did you try turning off the tags before you rendered?
Switch the drop down in the filters tab to “Final”. It’s likely set to “Preview”.
Try that. Post back if it doesn’t help!

Also, if you’re using “Capture Now”, and have a huge number in the preferences set for the “Limit Capture Now to” option, it will take forever to make sure you have enough space for such a huge capture. Without in and out points, it will assume that you want to capture to the total length for which your “Limit Capture Now” is set.
It’s sometimes best to avoid Capture Now whenever possible, and to keep captures to 15 to 20 minutes in length.
Have you tried logging a few chunks o’video and using Batch Capture instead?
And, lastly, if you have any anti-virus software, it’s a really good idea to disable it when using FCP. If you can get away with it, remove it completely from your computer. There are no viruses that exist yet for OSX, so any anti-virus programs you may be running don’t actually protect your computer, because there’s nothing out there yet from which it needs protecting. Even if someone created one tomorrow, no anti-virus package that exists today could protect you from something that didn’t exist when the anti-virus program was written, anyhow. It would have to be a whole new piece of software. What anti-virus programs really do is help you to be a good citizen by not passing along a Windows virus to a Windows user. If it’s not required that you have anti-virus protection by your employer or whomever, you could just delete it.

I think you need a beefier graphics card, but I could be mistaken.
The stock card isn’t usually the best for video. It’s great for other things, just not video.

Ahh, very good to know, Kevin–
I wasn’t sure if they’d relocated things to other menus and such, that’s usually what gets me with tutorials. Things get moved from one version to the next and the tutorials don’t always get updates. This makes it frustrating to find things when you don’t know what you’re looking for, ‘cos if you knew what you were looking for, then you probably don’t need the tutorial!
So, if all is where we left it, then that IS the beauty of it!
