You do indeed, but not in Preferences.
Under the Final Cut Pro menu you’ll fine “System Settings…..”, choose that. The first tab in the System Settings window is “Scratch Disks”. Your internal drive will probably already be listed on the first line, and there will be three more lines for additional drives. Click on the “Set” button on the second line and choose your external drive from the window that will open.
You’ll probably want to uncheck all of the options in the row for your internal drive, and check them for the external drive. Most folks keep project files on their boot drive and media files, including render files, on other drives.

I just purchased a dual SATA port pcmcia card from Granite Digital (mac/pc) and a two bay hot swapable SATA II box from Firmtek for use with my G4 Powerbook. If you have a laptop with a card slot that might be an option. I love the ability to swap drives. I’ll be doing some speed tests next week and will post the results. I have one of Firmtek’s four bay boxes hooked up to a G5 tower. For DV or HDV projects I’m using a two drive striped raid configuration, more for storage space than for speed. Now I can pull a pair from the desktop machine and edit in the field, or vice versa.
There’s no question that the cables are not nearly as elegent as a single Firewire cable.

Sounds like a bad idea to me. Have you ever had a DVD recorder fail to finalize a disk? I have. For me it was just a pain to redub to another disk…. for a live recording it would be a disaster.
Is the client just looking to do this on the cheap, or is this some kind of workflow issue like getting copies of the dvd to conference attendees on the spot?
I’ve worked with a company that uses up to 4 HDV cameras tied through a switcher with simultanous recording of camera iso feeds and a switched feed directly to hard drives. That seems a much safer solution. Take a look at their website:

Good points Bob. I guess the key to his comment is the mood being set “in part”. The “Best Practices….” statement does indeed caution about the copyrighted material being used to set the scene, but also points to a big difference between a filmaker truthfully documenting what is going on as opposed to being at all responsible for the material being used.
I disagreed that it was clearly a violation of copyright, only the filmaker knows what happened, and if he/she can prove it in court. (or wants to).
Another avenue that many don’t pursue is to just ask for permission. It’s not unheard of for copyright holders to see some value in an incidental use.

I can’t tell you what magic they do, but I can tell you that on the many shows I’ve done that incorporate a plasma screen (or any other display for that matter) the video engineer always asks for a shot of the screen with a camera that has already been chipped, then he/she paints the screen (with a proc. amp?) to match, using color bars fed to the display.

I respectfully disagree. This specific issue is discussed in the “Documentary Filmaker’s Statement of Best Practices in Fair Use” published by the Center for Social Media.

You might try taking all of the extra drives out of the system and see if FCP is stable with only the Apple supplied drive in your new machine. If it is…. you can narrow the problem to your other drives. If it isn’t, you will know the problem lies elsewhere.
If none of that points to the problem, please post as much information about your system as you can…. all software versions (including Quicktime), what drives? what firmware? It seems you made a lot of changes simultaneously, which makes troubleshooting harder to do.
