I’ve finally taken the advice from some of you and purchased an external firewire hard drive (500 GB!) for using FCP with my iMac. I’ve never used one of these and was wondering how to set up my system to use extra storage for capturing media files, rendering, Livetype etc. in order to free up my internal hard drive.
Is this just as simple as “saving project” in new drive or do i need to create new pathways in Preferences. I’ve looked in FCP manual and see nothing of this.
Once again, i’m mainly using the new external HD for my media.

Any advice would be helpful, thanks.

    System Preferences > Scratch Disk.

Select the external drive as your scratch disk and your Video Captures and Renders will go to this drive.

[dwheel] “or do i need to create new pathways in Preferences.”

You do indeed, but not in Preferences.

Under the Final Cut Pro menu you’ll fine “System Settings…..”, choose that. The first tab in the System Settings window is “Scratch Disks”. Your internal drive will probably already be listed on the first line, and there will be three more lines for additional drives. Click on the “Set” button on the second line and choose your external drive from the window that will open.

You’ll probably want to uncheck all of the options in the row for your internal drive, and check them for the external drive. Most folks keep project files on their boot drive and media files, including render files, on other drives.

First, before you put any data on it, go to APPLICATIONS > UTILITIES > DISC UTILITY

Select the new drive and erase it. Set the format type to “Mac OS Extended” (Not Journaled)

The drive probably comes in a format that your Mac can read, but it’s best to make sure it’s formatted properly before you start using it.
