Agreed. I think the only real-world application for 1080p@60fps for the near future would be if you’re making a 30p project and want to slow motion footage, which is certainly a nice ability.

Well for editing I’d definitely stick with Nvidia, but that doesn’t mean you have to use Intel. Bill’s original recommendation of the AMD Phenom II X6 1055T is good. I’m currently using one at the office and it’s nice. At home I have an i7 920 and that’s great too. I’ve never had a single problem running an Nvidia card on an AMD motherboard, or an Intel one for that matter. Unless you’re going for a budget PC I would stick to standalone cards an not onboard video.

Well like John just said, you really need to be comparing Apples to Apples (hah!) You can find plenty of non-Apple monitors that look every bit as good as Apple ones, you just haven’t yet because most people don’t shell out for the nicer monitors if they don’t have the need. Look into some decent quality IPS monitors. There are no such thing as mac monitors or pc monitors. They all work with any type of computer and so do most of the video cards. With the Apple brand monitors you’re paying some extra money for a good quality screen, and some more extra money for a name brand.

Well these two statements go hand in hand. Apple likes their users to live in a bubble where they never go outside of apple products for their needs. Editing mov files on PC can be achieved by getting apple quicktime. Since it’s insanely easy for us pc users to use Canon’s h264 mov files, but mac users wouldn’t have a clue what to do if the files their cameras made didn’t end in .mov, then Canon probably figures why not make them mov files? Either that or they’re paid off by Apple.
If you want to edit Quicktime files I suggest installing Quicktime. Compared to it’s competition Vegas has been amazing in it’s acceptance of a variety of formats mixed into a single timeline. Xvid is nice for bootlegs but it’s a delivery format, not an editing one.

Well all the other replies seem to cover what you’ll need to fix this particular issue, but I would just reiterate what I’ve heard on this forums many times over the years, which is that if the goal is a DVD just render an MPEG2 straight out of Vegas instead of trying to do some “better” quality format then having DVDA render it to MPEG2 itself. I guess the wisdom is that Vegas gives you more control over what you’re rendering to and lets you see what it looks like before you actually make the DVD.

You are correct, CUDA is used to render out files to h264. I sincerely wish that Sony had put in the work to allow the preview window to make use of this technology, but as it stands Adobe did and Sony didn’t. As a direct result of that the other editors in my office have switched from mac to pc and I just spent my weekend building new PC’s with 470GTX nvidia cards and we’re waiting for CS5 to arrive. I had dreamed of one day converting everyone at work to Vegas but Sony just took a dump on my dreams 😛
The boss’ daughter insists I should switch to CS5 also so we’re all “on the same page.” Feh, I’d rather go freelance than ditch Vegas. I mean, Sony will fix this huge lapse in judgment eventually… right?

Since I first discovered the Kensington SxS SDHC card adapters or “cheaters” as the local rental place calls them (remember the ones that wouldn’t even let you close the card door?) I have always used nothing but SanDisk Extreme cards, which were class 6 at the time but later went up to class 10, and we always used 16gb ones. The card this happened on was our first and only Transcend 32gb card that the boss bought at the WEVA convention a month or so ago. I was skeptical because whenever something works well for me I become very brand loyal and adverse to change, then something like this happens which just reinforces my paranoid tendencies 🙂
Thanks for the info though, and yes the camera is running firmware 1.20 and he didn’t receive any restore message. I know we’ve had that happen in the past and it always restores fine. He never removed the card from the camera the whole day, and we still have the second partition of the missing clip, which is about 6 minutes long, just not the 18 minute first part. It was actually during a Bar Mitzvah ceremony, so while a reshoot won’t quite be the same, at least it’s possible to do.
