You never mention your media drive, only that your coworker is playing back from a networked drive.
Your hard drive subsystem is as important as any other component… Pease elaborate… To help you’ll need to state the number of hard drives in the RAID and the connectivity to the computers, for both yours and your coworker”s machines.

It’s kind of a toss-up… Transcoding to Pro Res before grading could, in theory, I introduce some artifacts, but grading a hi-performance codec like Pro Res has numerous advantages as well, including faster and less processor intensive renders.

Gotcha Ryan! I thought he was referring to a straight-up MPEG 2 file, as in DVD quality in 4:2:0 color space, not a camera original MPEG variant.

Don’t let the whole subscription vs ownership argument get in the way of business. The folks caught up in that in discussion are a) missing out on the most complete solution in the market; and, b) either miscalculating the cost, or simply living a myth based upon “false economy.”
Not one of the current crop of NLEs is perfect, however the complete Adobe suite of apps offers terrific value that supersedes all others in terms of the vast toolset offered for the price. While FCP X advocates may argue that X is a better value, at only $300, by the time all the necessary plugins and addons are purchased, the cost can easily be much, much higher.

I understand your logic, but if you road test before making certain your engine is running properly you will have too many variables to deal with, and you will never be certain which of those variables are creating issues.
Now that you have mentioned you have an 8-drive RAID we can eliminate that as the source of your issue, and we can look deeper. That’s how it works best here, i.e. you ask for help, supply the info we need, and we try our best to help you.
As has been mentioned by others, since we know your system is quite capable of seamlessly playing 4K Pro Res and a host of other codecs as well, it does seem to point to AVCHD as the culprit. That’s precisely why Sony switched from AVCHD to XAVC as their chosen hi-performance codec.

VBR encoding with lots of money flying in the frame will create exported frames that are all at different compression rates and potentially different quality.

We know what you want to do, but you have not explained why you have chosen to grade MPEG 2, which is certainly not a good choice for many reasons, including bad compression low color depth.

That’s like saying you want to discuss the difference in performance between two cars without discussing the difference in their engines.
Also, you said you’re using a Thunderbolt RAID, but failed to mention how many hard drives in the enclosure. There are 2-drive RAIDs, up to RAIDs with many more drives, and each time you double the number of drives you essentially double the performance of the RAID, so just answering my earlier question with the type if RAID, but not its number of hard drives tells us VERY little.
