Possibly a handles issue. Check your handles setting in Resolve – maybe it’s not set, maybe it’s set too high or too low?

  • Moving to FCP X in the middle of a project simply because of it’s database functionality would NOT be a wise choice for you in my opinion. With Prelude and Premiere, or simply with Premiere on its own, you’ll have plenty of organizational tools for documentary work. If you move to X, you’ll have to learn an entirely different way of working, which will take lots of your time and brainpower, and that will negate any advantage you might get from database functionality. On the other hand, moving from FCP 7 to Premiere is a piece of cake.

I’ll bet you simply upgraded from an earlier version of the OS rather than performing a clean ground-up install, right???

February 20, 2016 at 2:22 am in reply to: FCP X vs Premiere Pro CS6 ???

    Ken,

For the record, it’s not like Premiere CS6 is just like the Premiere Creative Cloud, with the exception of the subscription model. CS6 is now ancient software, and it’s inferior to CC in so many ways that I can’t even begin to think of someone like you taking the time to bother to learn it at this point.

Meanwhile, while FCP X is certainly cheaper, and doesn’t have the subscription model, it’s an entirely different way of working that has a learning curve much longer than that of Premiere. In addition, unless you work in an “ecosystem” with other editors using X, you’ll find yourself isolated from most other post pros in your area if you switch to X, as relatively few editors, colorists, etc. have experience interfacing with X users. And, if your clients aren’t using X you’ll likely lose them, as most prefer their editors to use the more traditional NLE apps if they do. Of course, coming from Vegas, you were already using non-traditional software, so perhaps using X won’t be as much of an issue for you.

Check out the Sonnet Thunderbolt expansion chassis – while T-bolt 2 may not have the bandwidth to get 100% of the performance out of the highest end GPU cards, you can must certainly get a good bit of extra performance that your built-in graphics card cannot achieve

FYI, the latest Sonnet T-bolt expansion chassis will be upgradable to T-bolt 3 when it is released.

  • Run the Blackmagic or AJA disk speed test on that ESDI drive and publish the results here please Al. How old is that drive? And, you’re certain it’s an ESDI drive?

Also, is that ESDI drive your media drive?

Which would be terrific if it did make up for the missing processor, but it doesn’t.

The “decommissioning” of Moore’s law is interesting, but more important to this group is Apple’s decommissioning of a 2nd processor in the 2013 and beyond MacPros.
