March 7, 2016 at 9:10 pm in reply to: Premiere server workflow for multiple editorsWhy are you asking here instead of calling Promax Support? I can assure you, few here are capable of answering questions related to Promax Platform and/or about installations with 15-20 editors.
That being said, playback of ProRes 4444 media by that many editors in a shared storage environment is virtually impossible due to bandwidth limitations – the Platform can be configured to throttle the necessary bandwidth to one or two workstations editing or onlining ProRes 4444, but not to all 15 or 20. You’ll need to have direct attached storage connected to all workstations if many of your editors are working with 4444 media. And the same is true of FCPX by the way.

Transcoding is time intensive, but not labor intensive – i.e. It can be done while you’re sleeping or eating lunch. Editing, rendering, and latency are all time and labor intensive. So, would you prefer to do the heavy lifting, or would rather let your computer do it while you’re sleeping? You get to choose. I know which I prefer. 🙂

Transcoding MP4 to ProRes doesn’t make the video better, but it will hold up to color correction, etc. a lot better and through more generations.

March 4, 2016 at 4:37 am in reply to: Does Adobe CC 2015 work well with El Capitan? If you simply clone your boot drive before trying it out you never have to waste any time worrying about updating or upgrading.
However, even if you ask the question and get all the affirmation you want that it’s 100% safe, updating your working boot drive could wipe you out and cost you an enormous amount of time to rebuild a working system.
Meanwhile, it seems the latest version of El Cap is just fine for “most” users. But, buyer beware…

Hey Tom,
Technically speaking, both channels “should” be mono, center panned, as Alex already suggested.

Bryce,
The reason Sony moved from AVCHD to XAVC is because AVCHD was hard to work with on many levels, including being processor intensive. Unfortunately, XAVC is also no bargain yet, because optimization in most editing software is not great.

MP4, like all of the MPEG variants including h.264, is no bargain where realtime performance is concerned, because all of those codecs, like AVCHD, are extremely processor intensive. In addition, MP4 will not hold up well in color correction, with intensive use of filters, or beyond a couple of generations.
ProRes on the other hand is a high performance codec, specifically designed for easy playback. And, it holds up well with lots of processing and through many generations.
So, until you get a more modern camera, keep your current workflow.
