While I don’t disagree with you in principle, your argument above has been argued by software users for years against virtually every software manufacturer under the sun, but unfortunately it’s a losing proposition, because virtually all manufacturers long ago implemented a “fake it until you make it policy.”

So, even though you may be 100% right, that will never save your bacon at the end of the day, the only thing that will is cloning your working boot drive before installing any update, so you always have a working system to fall back on.

I’m sorry, but with that attitude you won’t last long in this business. And, no professional should ever install updates on their editing system(s) without first cloning their bout drive.

The DP on Robert Rodriquez’s Spy Kids did the same thing and the only way to fix the problems was to rotoscope every element in every frame if the film.

You can’t recompress video, it’s ALL compressed right out of the camera, so you should not set your LTO to compress video at all.

You are in a very common perdicament Michael with no great solutions at this point. Of course it hurts to pay a yearly support fee when you don’t need help, only to be left out in the cold later when you do need help. And, to make matters worse, finding help is not easy, as few technicians want to get involved with hardware and issues created by someone else.

Your Roark system is long outdated and is now ancient technology, so whatever you do, spend nothing, or as little as possible, getting it fixed, as you can get vastly more powerful shared storage today for a fraction of what you paid for the old Roark.

Instead of buying expensive hardware and software yourself, and trying to rent it out, you should think about renting it yourself from a company already in that business. Atlas Digital, Runway, Moviola Digital, and others are in the rental biz, and they know what they’re doing. If you make the purchase yourself, you will most likely rent it out once or twice a year at best, and if something goes awry for your customer, as in pilot error on their part, you’ll be the person or company forced to deal with the aftermath.
