[Steve Connor] “[Herb Sevush] “OK, so show me the error of my ways. From within FCPX can you select a section of your timeline and send those clips to Motion, with their in and outpoints preserved, for further compositing? that is a requirement for a bi-directional work flow, something that has been available in many NLE’s for over 15 years.

Of course you can’t Herb and many of us would rather you could, there is some excellent integration in other ways but sadly it lacks this very basic ability which is odd as the other integration seems to be much more complex”

I remember taking some opinion survey a couple of years ago and I told them they need to bring back “Send To Motion”, looks like they did not get the memo. Adobe does have Dynamic Link, so why can’t Apple have something similar? Bangs head against wall in disbelief and despair. Ouch!

You bring up a great question at which point i have no answer. This has long been a minor beef for me, the lack of “Send To Motion” is frustrating. My guess is that, going forward, Apple feels Motion is integrated enough, depending on your definition of that word. Every update that has come about has not fullfilled that one little wish.

Another little wish that I have is the spacial conform setting. I tried using an adjustment layer, spanned across several clips, with the hopes of changing the spacial conform setting globally to those clips within the adjustment layer. That and in the blend modes have to be changed on the individual clips as it will not work in the adjustment layer. Opacity, position and those other things will work. Not sure why this is. Nice to have a way to create an adjustment layer but still needs some minor tweaking.

I also had to create my own countdown leader, something else that is missing.

Sorry for the bit of rant and getting a bit off topic here. I just feel FCP X needs some minor tweaking because I really love editing with it.

You are saying it’s best to leave the cache files on the system drive?

I see great things for Fusion. If there is a package like Nuke Studio I will be very happy to try that out. Not into compositing but I do like using Fusion to add some flare to my videos, all without wearing those silly buttons.

    Oliver,

Thanks for posting. I do have a question for you, if you have a moment. I am planning on filming, in the traditional sense, with a Super 8 camera and my Bolex H16 camera in a few weeks. What would be the best resolution to scan in at. Also, would flavor of ProRes should I use?

Plan on editing with FCP X, color correction (very light) to be done with either Color Finale or Resolve. No heavy VFX or compositing will be needed, just a simple title card or title sequence will be the most that is done.

I plan to finish out to DVD or upload to Vimeo.

Any suggestions, feedback or whatever is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the heads up. Guess it is time to save up for a Red camera. I also feel the price point is a little too high for a Digital Bolex, just my opinion.

I have an older Mac Pro, the cheese grater variety. Render times in Resolve Studio are painful and anything above HD results in sluggish playback performance. Time for an upgrade there.

I plan on adding Premiere Pro by middle of the year but staying clear of After Effects for now. Not anything to with the subscription only “option”, just don’t have a need for it at the time.

I been eyeing the Digital Bolex but have yet to hear from anyone on here if it is worth the cost. It only records in 2K format as far as I know which could be a factor in a purchase descion.

Might sign up for Adobe Stock here in a few weeks as Photoshop resides on the computer unless there is a more affordable option.

Carry on the rant, the debate and all of that nonsense back to work for me.
