Building computers isn’t my bag, but I can certainly tell you that 8Gb of RAM is about the minimum you’d want to have for a 64-bit O/S and the programs you mentioned. If you can’t afford more RAM now, at least make sure you plan for upgrade … for example, filling your slots with 2Gb sticks that would become trash in order to upgrade would be a bad idea, but you should be fine with two 4Gb sticks that you can add to.

The issues you’re having don’t sound like a specific question that can be answered in a forum post. Richard’s books are very good and you will likely need them … or at least some of the very many resources available for all Adobe software. It is important to understand that you’re not having trouble getting things done because something is wrong with the software … almost all Adobe software is designed primarily for professionals so trying to learn it without any sort of training or guidance leads to nothing more than a lot of frustration and wasted time … as it sounds like you are finding out the hard way.

You might also search the COW for many detailed tips on reducing banding such as grain and adjusting individual color channels … has come up very often over the years in the After Effects forum.

July 28, 2011 at 5:45 pm in reply to: Is it possible to create a Proxy for only a portion of a clip?Maybe I’m not understanding the situation properly, but is there a reason you couldn’t just add the footage to a comp, trim that comp to the needed section, render it out low-rez, use that low-rez render to work on, then use the comp the low-rez was rendered from to replace the low-rez render in the master comp before the final render?

Anyone know how that GTX 570 rates for PP and in general? Preferably in terms understandable by a person who is more tech savvy than average, but not an IT person either. It’s on the PP Mercury support list so I’m just asking is it just barely spec-worthy or pretty good?
I’m considering a GTX 570 for my wife’s new puter, which will by no means be a dedicated video/graphics station, but at the same time, considering my line of work, I’m not willing to spend on any hardware that can’t handle my work tools decently if needed. So, does that card seem a reasonable choice for the purpose?

Yes, it seems you would get the best results without spending insane amounts of time by shooting it the way Adam or Nicholas described, then accentuating in post, rather than trying to do it all in post.
In addition to the other suggestions, you might also try a light touch of Sapphire Rays or Trapcode Shine with the detail dialed way down to get the look of light emitting from the door towards the person, but without the unnatural look of distinguishable rays. Applied to an invisible solid or mask, the effect could be scaled and slightly rotated vertically as the door opens. Again, if you’re looking for realism (opposed to a very extreme sci-fi type look), keep this part of the effect modest.
Considering the plague of Trapcode Shine in every cheesey local spot for the first few years after its release, I never thought I’d actually suggest using Shine, but this seems a practical application if I ever heard one.

I have the same need, but have always had trouble finding anything suitable. Might anyone be able to provide a link to someplace that online that sells good chairs? For example, do you see anything you might recommend at either of these places?

https://www.sit4less.comI must have height adjustment so one issue has always been finding height adjustable without swivel. I know it’s best to adjust with the cam, but that’s just not possible in my situation … one-man band, often with prompter, a logo behind the people, and forced to start rolling as soon as people sit down because there are too many executives back-to-back in way too little time since 30 minutes of their time costs more than I make in a month; yet, everything is supposed to look and sound perfect every time for the same reason.

July 26, 2011 at 11:51 pm in reply to: Light beam/rays? That you find in music videos alot?Similar to what Dave said, I don’t see anything in that image I would call light beams or rays … looks like either fire or a blob with a white Glow filter over it. Perhaps post a better example or description of what you’re talking about … not everyone watches lots of music videos.

I got “Page not found” … perhaps just upload a screen shot or video file. There are many ways to change text color … Tint, Colorama, HSL, etc. … just animate the color property or properties you prefer.

Sorted, but in case you have the same issue again … although I don’t recall specifics since I haven’t needed one in a while, I know with certainty that there are a few good comp re-naming scripts out there too.
