Stick me in the ‘not so smart’ group because I have 4 of the 32Gb SxS cards (and 6 8Gb sxs as well) knowing full well about the cheaper alternatives, but I’m from Melbourne!

isn’t that the software only media 100 edit suite? it is not the current m100 hardware version.

Thanks for your ‘short’ explanation Floh. Always a bank of brilliant information. Being technically trained, I am up to speed with the technical aspects. Perhaps my question was partly ‘tongue in cheek’ and partly directed towards Media 100 themselves.
My very humble opinion is that Media 100 should perhaps bite its tongue and conform to Apple’s 0-255 levels as the Hardware/software does rely on the Mac platform, especially that Quicktime does not support the 16-235 colourspace. Nonetheless, it may be that Media 100 is technically correct and its colurspace may very well be ‘superior’ to Apple’s but it’s the lowest common denominator that needs to be considered here.
What are your thoughts on that Wickham (and you of course Floh)?

I have been using Caldigit’s HDPro for over a year with flawless results. It absorbs uncompressed HD effortlessly and has no trouble keeping up with M100 editing. I use uncompressed for TVCs & other small broadcast jobs as the data rate is so high, there is not much room on the system for terribly much uncompressed content.
So if you really want or need drives that will handle uncompressed, invest in the largest array your budget can afford and don’t forget to set them up as a RAID 5 for redundancy protection.

Floh is correct about Apple’s Compressor. There are many people not seeing great results from all their hard work after Compressor has encoded the program. That being said however, I use Compressor for all my DVDs off M100 (and FCP) and I always get great DVD results from HD and SD bases.
Pretty much all of my HD editing is in ProRez422HQ and output in the same codec to Computer 0-255 video levels. It does take some time to output from M100 in this way, but the black & white levels are correct for Compressor.
I always run 2 pass VBR with Best settings at a moderate bitrate (not too high as that can cause problems) and compress the audio to Dolby Digital. I find that Compressor’s downconversion works a real treat, so I cannot complain.
Many of my projects have been subjected to big screen displays with superb results.
Certainly try Bitvice for your MPEG2 encoding as it is a very sophisticated and highly acclaimed encoding software.

Apple and the Blu-Ray consortium have many legal, licensing & cost issues that have steered Apple along the non Blu-Ray path for the moment.I doubt that is the case with Media 100 and EX codec so that comparison is not realistic but I understand what you are saying. Nonetheless, your initial answer was honest enough for me – thank you. I do hope that Media 100 WILL include this increasingly popular codec in the near term.
Yes, I import & convert the files to PR422HQ easily and it all looks great, but the EX choice would be appreciated as Media 100 does not offer many HD codec choices at all.
I will keep asking.

Thanks for the news update Wick. I will wait for your official ‘blessing’. Hope that all works out well for both Media 100 and all us end users, not that I have any problem with QT 7.5.
P.S. V13 (which I just upgraded to because I had too many projects on the go) looks great. Thanks Media 100.

Actually I have 12.7.1 and i have had it for some time. Ironically the memory issues occurred with 12.7.1.
I just have not had time to update to 13 as I am in mid project on at least 3 projects and I do not want to upgrade until I finish them, which will be within 2 weeks.
I don’t have any DVDs to create from M100 for the time being, so I am not too concerned at the moment.

12.7 on 8 core MacPro with 4Gb RAM and heaps of Tb space. I cannot understand this.
