Check out Convergent Design’s website. They have the nanoFlash, which has just started shipping. Records straight out of the HDSDI output onto Compact Flash cards in 35Mbs @420 plus an array of higher rates at 422. Looking forward to mine arriving soon. Will sit on the rear shoe of my EX3.

You can only shoot in HD with the EX cameras, so you have the selection capability to select from 60i (30p and associated rates) NTSC ‘area’ such as USA, Canada etc or the 50i (25p rate) PAL ‘area’ such as Europe, Australia and other parts of the world and an obscure 24p, the film like rate. PAL & NTSC are standard definition formats.

Strictly speaking, the camera does not record in PAL or NTSC, as is is strictly an HD camera although there are less than useful SD composite & s-video outputs, which in my opinion should never be used for serious recordings.

The worldwide capability aspect is another wonderful bang for bucks feature of the EX camera. You are set wherever you may be in the world.

As one would reasonably expect, M100 works perfectly with PR422 HQ, which is what I use all the time for HD projects. AE integrates perfectly too with M100, just export the AE clip wih the same codec as you are using in M100, the best editing system around!!!

Uncompressed HD edits with the same ease as 422 as I have a Caldigit hdpro box that works uncompressed in its stride. I don’t work with color.

Yes,
There is the all too important Sony Clip Browser for moving the data files off the SxS card(s) and onto other storage meduims. I use 2 x 500Gb Rugged and then move them onto 2 internals in my macpro. I have always got at least 2 of everything.

The Clip Browser is important in that it carries out a cyclic redundancy check after transferring the files. Currently I use Sony’s second software called XDCAM EX Transfer to import into M100. I use Apple ProRez 422 HQ codec for all of my HD editing except for some very special edits that may require uncompressed.

It takes a little time to import but I set it up for the transfer/import, go away to carry out other jobs and by the time I return, the importing is usually completed. I do not know exactly how the NF with its QT files will work but I will let you know in due course as the NF does not record in the same way as SxS.

Hi Paul,

Just to clear up a minor point to your post, CD has 2 products.
The first is the XDR, which is a relatively large recorder that utilises up to 4 CF cards. This unit is currently available. The second is the nanoflash, which is 90% the same as the XDR, but is smaller in size and is pretty much targeted at the EX & other HSSDI/SDI cameras and any HDMI camera such as the V1.

I have an EX3 and I have an order for one of the first nanoflash recorders, which will be available early July. I have M100 HDe and I too am looking at the very best way to import the nanoflash’s 422 recordings.

It looks like a magical box and I cannot wait to try it out. Once I have it, I will experiment with it and post my findings.

I just had this argument with a poster on another forum. He wanted to know exactly that. He did not want to understand that the EX cameras do not record in PAL or NTSC. As Craig & Rafael stated, PAL (as NTSC & SECAM) are related to SD, not HD. There isn’t PAL or NTSC in HD, just various scanning rates.

You can set the EX cameras to record the scanning rates to PAL areas & NTSC areas, but you then have the option to set additional rates, especially in NTSC area.

What about the hard drives themselves? Are you sure they are capable of the flavour of HD you want to be using? I have a Caldigit HDPro RAID array and it is capable of uncompressed 10 Bit HD. I’m just not sure about your hard drives’ capabilities based on what you have mentioned.

I bought the XS 17×5.5BRM lens when I bought the camera. Not only do you have superb control over zoom speed & smoothness, but the better ergonomics of the lens and setup lends itself to a better hand holding/semi shoulder mounting experience, which, in my opinion, offsets from the added weight to the front.

I also have the VF Gadgets reinforced base plate and connected to it is my radio mic receiver which adds a little weight at the back.
