I’m pretty new to the biz. Certainly when you’re talking HD (we don’t even have our KONA card yet.) But we picked up a Panasonic BT1700W and I love it. I’ve been using it for SD so far and it’s less than pretty, but I’m always pleasantly surprised when I double check on a CRT monitor. I referenced it to a Panasonic CRT and tweaked the calibration to match and I’m really happy. The whites aren’t as bright, but I’ve grown acustomed to it. The y/c comes out a little green, but with component it’s great.

I love it. My 2 cents.

I picked up the 17″ specificaly for the HVX. From all accounts it sounds like the chip is 720 anyway. We looked at a Sony Z1u in 1080i on it and it looked really great. So I fugure it’s going to do the trick. I also have my 23″ cinema display if I really need to see pixel for pixel.

We really had to balance the price-performance-features equation and decided the 17″ LCD was the right choice. SD looks a little crappy on it because it is uprezzed and LCD, but frankly I feel like I’m getting a more critical than average view as a tipical crt kind of smooths things out. Also the colors are great. I side by sided it with a Panasonic CRT and the only issue I saw was that the LCD whites don’t get as bright.

We got our BTLH1700W over a month ago from our local Panasonic dealer. It is sweet. I’m very pleased. We didn’t even have to order it. They had one in stock and we’re in Albuquerque.

I know B&H has ’em.

The HVX also has a native 16:9 chip which the DVX does not. In this respect it’s probably closer to an FX1 shooting DV or an XLH1 again shooting DV.

No it was not you I was talking to, but we did take your seminar on the Digital Facility Workflows. Very informative. Thank you.

Does it matter whether we go with the 1.25 gig S2S or the 2.5? I would consider 6 streams to be a minimum. And we’d love to be able to do one stream uncompressed for greenscreens and effects.

I just noticed that PROMAX has an array that looks like two four drive housings together (8 drives) that clocks around 400 MB/s with 2TB for about the same price as the big S2S.

What do think.

I really appreciate the response. What kind of array are you using? And what is the minimum bandwith for 1 stream uncompressed, out of curiosity. We will be doing DVCPROHD, but for edification’s sake I’m curious.

If we up to the 2.5 LaCie do we get up to 4+ streams or do we have to go Fibre Channel or SCSI for that.

By the way, I didn’t name the “guy’s” company because they are a pretty big outfit in New York and I don’t want to unduly cast aspersions if I just misunderstood him (which I kind of figure I did.) I will say the sales rep from LaCie told me his drive would do 10 streams of DVCPROHD but he may have been selling sofas last week for all I know.
