    Same here.

    I’ve been running with 4.5 RAM since I got my G5 [Nov. 2004], also with no problems.

    Was interested in the responses to your question though. I was hoping I haven’t been “slowing” my G5 down with the extra 512.

    Are you just starting up with FCP and have a lot of BetaSP footage and still shoot BetaSP?

    I purchased the BlackMagic DeckLink SP card and it has worked great for me. Using this I am able to capture 8bit Uncmopressed.
    Unless I’m missing something, if you shoot in BetaSP, I think you’ll want to be capturing it that way and editing in 8bit Uncompressed.
    Text graphics and moving JPEGs are so much clearer when editing on an 8bit Uncompressed timeline.

    I realize it’s more money, but if you’re use to BetaSP quality, I think you’ll find editing on the DV codec to be a let down.

    For what it’s worth. (it may not even be 2 cents)

    Even if you don’t have any BetaSP clips, and you are editing in DV, if you have any title graphics or still pictures you may want to up your sequence to 8-bit uncompressed to gain quality in your titles, graphics and stills. Especially if your final distribution method is DVD. I found a huge quality difference doing this the few times I was working with DV footage. Especially on stills that had movement in them.

    You can also use most audio software editing programs to increase the volume after it has been exported from FCP.

    Greg,

    I don’t have a DVC Pro deck, but in your Edit to Tape “Device Settings”, can’t you set the Device Control to BlackMagic and the Capture/Input” to Firewire?

    If you have a tape already blacked and time coded, then you can set your in and out points in your Sequence. Drag the Sequence into the Viewer. Set your In point on your DVC Pro tape in the Edit to Tape window with the same In Point as in your Sequence. When you hit Assemble or Insert this will hopefully perform the edit.

    Again, I don’t have this problem. This is how I do edits onto a UVW-1800. But if you are not doing it this way, maybe it will work for you.

    You could 2 video slugs and then crop each, one for the top mask and one for the bottom. Place them over the length of your timeline.

    Did you check to see that there was actually an ALPHA channel in the document?

    And that the ALPHA channel has the mask areas you want?

    This is my workflow. I’t may be unnecessary or redundant, but it works for me and I haven’t had any problems with my videos, they look great on DVD.

    In FCP I mark my In and Out points on the timeline for my entire show. Then I EXPORT an AIFF file. I then EXPORT a QuickTime movie as a BlackMagic 8-Bit Uncompressed (just like my Sequence). I then convert the AIFF movie in Apack. Then I convert the 8-Bit video to MPEG-2 in QuickTime at the 6.5 MPS setting.

    Don’t know if this helps or not.

    I’m not talking “Gone with the Wind”. A 10 second tag that shows who made the DVD
    It would probably be over by the time they walk over to the player to take out the disc.

    I do see your point though. But they’d probably remember me! “Oh, that’s that SOB that made me watch his tag!” Mabye they would think, “Hey, I need this pushy ‘B’ to be doing my media.

    Anyway, thanks for the post. I’ve read (and copied for future reference) a lot of your other posts to other people. I spend an hour or so every now and then going through most of the posts, trying to learn as much as I can. I do it more on the FCP Forum, but I have been known to roam this one too, looking for knowledge. There were even a few times I had the answer to someone’s problem.
