I tested the mic on a different Mac and got clean audio. It’s not the mic. And for that matter, I also tested a dynamic mic and got the same bad result on the original computer. Walther Biscardi doubts that this is caused by the Kona card in the original computer. I just dunno what the source of it is. I’m just thankful that I can make it work on a different computer.

I was thinking of using the same camera solution, if this direct approach doesn’t work. But, interestingly enough, I just hooked up the same rig (Schoeps, Inspire A/D interface) to a different Mac that doesn’t have my Kona card in it and I got good clean audio. No static. The reason that I mention the Kona LC card is because someone else had said that exotic cards can sometimes introduce issues. Don’t know if this is the source, but I just know that I’m on the road to getting good audio directly into FC. The only difference is that the first Mac, which has my project on it, was a DVCProHD project and the test Mac that was successful in producing good audio had a DV timeline. My systems aren’t on a network, so I have to go through the process of rigging my drives to the second Mac to test conclusively if I can capture audio using the PreSonus Inspire into my DVCProHD project timeline.

Jeff, Fred,
Thanks so much for the quick response. I’ll give it a whirl.

Funny how encountering problems oft times results in my biggest learning leaps. Thanks to the various explanations, I pretty much get it. I’m not a fan of pirating software. I see now that I have to build an extra step into my model in order for clients to view in the raw what was shot. Not unlike old VHS “window dubs.” Nevertheless, it’s too bad that Panasonic and Apple haven’t worked a deal where the DVCProHD codec isn’t a feature of Quicktime Pro. And Zane, I do know that CS is Adobe, it just got confused with FCS in the heat of battle after a long day. You know how that goes. Many thanks, all.

After putting several DVCProHD codec components in the QT folder in my drive’s Library folder, voila! The movies play just fine within the standard QT player. For me, this is huge. I don’t have to make little skimpy web files, spending the extra time so my clients can see a shadow of what I shot for them in HD. Why the hell doesn’t Apple or Panni or whoever make the codec fit nicely into QT from the get go? Why the hassle? Do they really think someone is going to buy the Creative Suite just so they view HD .mov files on their desktop? It’s a ridiculous inconvenience which, I’m happy to say, my friend has the work around for. NOw I can get to bed at a reasonable hour.
Thanks, y’all for sharing thoughts and offering help.

I have about 40GB of material, probably around a 40 minutes worth. I’ll have to put it up on my ftp site, but there’s a 100MB limit. So, I’ll just have create something that’s gonna fit within the limits. Meanwhile, a friend just provided me with freestanding DVCProHD codec components. I’m going to try installing them within the QT library and see if they work any magic. This is a nasty inconvenience. .mov movies should just friggin’ play in QT.
Thanks for all the suggestions,

Tom,
The problem, believe it or not, is in the renaming of the drives that I was storing the P2 media on out in the field. I changed the brand new drives’ names as soon as I got them, not knowing that it would cause any kind of conflict with FCP. But, as soon as I changed the drives’ names back to what they were when they came back to the factory, the preview window worked. How arcane is that???

Tom,
Nah, installing updates didn’t affect the situation. Still can’t get picture to show up in the Log and Transfer preview window. What to do?

Tom,
I have P2 media on a FW800 drive that is in raw form. So, clearly, I’m trying to import and covert to .mov, putting this media on a different FW800 scratch disc. What I’m trying at the moment is updating my Apple OS support software. Namely, changing out QT 7.3 (which is reported to be problematic) with 7.4.1. Plus some updates to Tiger and professional suites. I’ll see if that has any effect.
Thanks,

I just bought two of these for $79 each, based on user comments on the DVXUser forum. Worth researching.
