It seems to me, Apple is saying you can (or soon will be able to) do it all on a Mac Book Pro. Gone will be the days you need a desk top computer with a big tower and lots of drives and storage space; everything is getting smaller and faster. And, cloud technology is the future. Who knows…maybe they’re right.

He’s using two wireless lav mics for the actors. The receivers are mounted on the back of the camera, and running out to a Beachtek mixer mounted on the Manfrotto rig. The audio runs out of the Beachtek into inputs 1 & 2 on the camera. He’s doing this for better control of the audio signal from the wireless mics.

I have to agree, the Prius is not a good analogy: not overpriced and not a status symbol. I think the VOLT would be more along those lines, at this point, anyway.

If anything, the ipad will come around to being more like a computer in years to come ie: faster, (maybe) more in/outputs, larger versions for professionals. And cloud technology will do away with any need for storage drives. They just need to get that holographic keyboard thing to become reality, too 🙂

Chances are that, in fact, they are running wireless lavs from the actors to a hard disk recorder like the Sound Devices 744T or 788T or a Zaxcom. Each mic is recorded on a separate channel as well as mixed on one channel; that gives post the most options.

I do know that FNL is, or was shot on Super-16mm film which means that no audio is actually being run to the camera.

Hi Michael,

How you mount it all depends on what you’re mounting to; different types of clothing will require different types of mounting.

Ty is right: stay away from anything silk or satin. I had to hide a sony ecm77b to a woman wearing an 1800’s dress made out of satin. I ended up making a baseball-sized ball of gaffer tape to isolate the mic, and I STILL got noise! Awful!

I haven’t had any success with the Rycote “Undercover” mounts, ether. I would still get some kind of clothing noise. Your best bet is most likely going to be the “sticky triangles” method.

Mic level.

This may sound obvious, but think of it this way: If the source is a mic, then it should be mic level; if it’s anything else, it should (most of the time) be line level. Mic level is just that: made for microphones.

The canopy is probably something you’ll have to custom make. How you make it may depend on how much you can spend and the space you have. One alternative is to use sound blankets. Put them on the floor (if the floor is not carpeted), and hang them from c-stands (out of frame). It’s one of those situations that dictates experimenting 🙂
