Among other things it gives you the ability to consolidate a project by timeline(s).
Most projects work towards ending up as one or more timelines depending on the number of versions required. If you need to rez up your material or even just archive the material used in the final timeline(s) you need media management. All professional level NLEs have this ability. PPro is the only one that I’m aware of that doesn’t. (I don’t know about Vegas and Im assuming that FCP has it)

Hi Jacob,
I can’t gain much from deleting timelines as most are used. It would have been nice of them to put in the function that when you double click on a sub-timeline clip in a timeline that it explodes with the in and out points marked. That way sub-timelines could be easily replaced. Without it it’s a bear to do. Not having that ability and not wanting to ingest 33 hours to replace all my footage I thought I might just export an edl of the finecut and then re-ingest those clips as HD. But the finecut is composed entirely of sub-timelines. And most of those subtimelines have subtimelines in them. If edl export refers only to the sub-timelines in the fine cut and doesn’t recurse down to the original clips I can’t do it.
Why they didn’t include proper media management in this long awaited release is beyond me.

OK, this is better than I feared…but only if export to edl will recurse into sub-timeline layers. Does it?

Wecome to the version 2 wake 🙂
Seeing as there doesn’t seem to be any more media management in 2 than in 1.5..
It seems I can’t consolidate from a timeline and as the trim project only works with all timelines in the project, I will have to reingest 33 hours of my material in order to move my one hour film from dv to HD. Fortunately my source is HDV and not HDCam. Lovely.

I’ll accept 2.5 instead of 2 🙂 but I don’t see how expecting media management, after 18 months, for an NLE that is supposedly “Pro” is too tough on them.
In fact, I would seriously question the leadership of the development team. I think they’ve done an awful job from the base design on up. From lousy memory management to lousy media management, to very a very poor understanding of the batch tools that make for useability in an NLE.
I had hopes for 2. Not high hopes, but I did expect them to deal with media management and I really would love some insight on how priorities were established for this last cycle.

No Media Management?
Aanarav, you only dock them half a point? I’d give them 2 out of 5 for the features in this release.
But no media management? Can someone with close ties to Adobe explain their thinking? Do they care whether this app is used in large professional projects? Do they have any serious commitment to the future of this app as a top level NLE? It’s hard to make he case for the affirmative based on the 18 months it’s taken for this release. It’s hard to fathom what they’ve been doing for the last 18 months.
Also can you please explain the comment about audio ratios and conforming a little better. Does it mean that all the audio over all the video in a project must be less than 2:1 to avoid conforming?

Richard, like Ron, I hope you’re right. OTHOH I wouldn’t expect a whole great deal from the development team that has shepherded the program to this point. I think we’ll see a lot of flash(y) integration and some scotch tape and bandaid solutions to some fundamental problems. Useability issues aside if the fundamental audio conform and memory management issues have not been addressed on a systemic level after 18 months then the development managers should be replaced, pure and simple. But let’s see where the chips fall.

Gary,
You should realy do a check on someone when you feel the urge to explain what a field is to them. Irregardless, you just don’t seem want to accept that Axio and PPro can be frame – no let me say ‘field’ accurate. Fine. There’s precious little I can add to that discussion then.As for your statement that “I think that HDV is a great beginning step for DV shooters, but I see it for what it is, and unfortunately it is a consumer format” it just betrays an elitist attitude to a format that has some built in shortcomings but with proper care in shooting and post can look terrific and work where varicams, sr’s and vipers can never go. Many of us will continue to use it as a professional format and chuckle at those who say it’s not.
