I realize it’s an expensive proposition at the moment but Axio does this specific function with their 8 mbs HD offline codec. You export all your media to this codec, edit on a laptop if you want, and then re-link your material to the HD original. I don’t know if anyone else provides something like this.

  • [Tim Kolb] “It sounds like the Axio probably solved most of his issue when it allowed him to work with HDV directly?”

For future projects, yes….It just means sticking with an online workflow.

  • [Mike Cohen] “What if you make a sub-clip out of your selects from the nested sequences before putting them into the edit you are buidling. Can you even do that? If so, then can you delete the original nested sequence without ruining the subclips? Doesn’t sound very promising.”

I’m not sure if PPro 2 allows making sub-clips of sub-timelines. Besides, the edit has been mostly built. The only way around ingesting 33 hours would appear to be replacing the subtimlines with source and I can’t see any easy way to do it that doesn’t involve multiple tedious steps. Easier to reingest.

  • [Tim Kolb] “He did say that this was pre-Axio, so chances are he had to “bump” the HDV to another HD codec inside his system when the “online” was ready to go…not nearly as petite a data footprint as HDV/DV…and editing in HDV native was impossible previous to PPro v2…and not even advisable now…”

In fact the project is getting ready to go HDV shortly but you are right that it was begun long before axio.

You are are also quite correct that the issue was double system sound. There was no way that I could see to maintain the relationship with the avi files, and their sound, outside of sub-timelines.

And also that recording the dynamic range of Tibetan ritual music was beyond the capabilities of the mpeg1 audio processing of the Sony Z1.

  • Lance,

It ws you who decided to get more than personal but I’ll not be responding to this. It’s not worth the waste of my time.

  • Thanks, that’s clear.

  • [Tim Kolb] “David…I am not entirely sure what you mean. Multiple sequences with trim with the rest of the project…are your sub-timelines full of that much extra material?

If you have a one-hour timeline, PPro will trim it as you describe…what am I missing?

…and please don’t tell me how I don’t know anything about real work, just stick to the substance of the issue please.”

    Tim,

I would never tell you you know nothing about real work and only responded to Lance that way because his post was so completely dismissive of the need for proper media management.

OK, you seem to have missed the explanation of my specific project that was started in 1.5 with the assumption that media management was such an obviously lacking feature that it would be in 2.0. My dumb mistake.

For a one hour documentary most of my material was shot HDV with double-system sound on a very good Sound Devices recorder. The material was ingested as DV to offline – before I had Axio 1.5. The audio files had to be manually synced in timelines with the avi files. Those timelines were then treated as master clip subtimelines and edited into sequences. Those sequences were then incorporated into an assembly timeline. This means that trying to use trim project has very little efficiency as 75% of the material is in timelines. I have no way to replace the downconverted dv material with the HDV source without re-ingesting 75% of the material. Such is my situation without media management.

Jacob didn’t respond to my earlier question whether export to edl recurses into subtimelines to the avi source timecode. That could potentialy save me though I’d have to re-apply all my effects.

    Is this more clear?

  • Apparently you really do wish to prove the point.

    But thanks for looking, anyway.

Personal attacks are easy when you’re way up there in our 51st state.”

You might just have proved the point 🙂

  • [Lance Bachelder] “This is easy to accomplish in Premiere Pro -“

    Lance,

I guess you know very little about editing large projects with multiple levels of subtimelines. Trim project in my case reduces a 45 hour project to 33 hours. A professional level NLE with media management will reduce my one hour timeline to one hour of material plus change. In my case I have all these sub-timelines because my material was shot double system sound and without media management there’s no way in PPro to combine the material in a lasting way without sub-timelines. Of course I could spend two weeks manually replacing the subtimelines. Then trim project would work.

You’d not reduce the review by .5 for not having media management? If it didn’t hurt so much I’d laugh.

    Oh Yeah,

A professional level NLE in my books is DEFINED by media management:

    Avid,
    Discreet edit,
    Liquid,
    Velocity,
(FCP I just haven’t seen it so I don’t know and Vegas I don’t yet consider professional level)
