NLE’s are among the most complex applications in the entire software universe. They must do hundreds of different tasks in a multitude of different ways for a wide spectrum of users and uses.
No one has ever managed to develop one from scratch to maturity in less than five major cycles. And as been pointed out here, Apple is not exactly known for developing in house sophisticated applications from scratch.
Just for the point of view of NLE history the notion that FCPx is almost ready to play in the bigs is borderline delusional. But hey, Craig, that hasn’t stopped you so far 🙂

Petros, I’m not running any Izotope plugins with PrPro and I’m also not on a Mac. But Every VST plugin that I’ve managed to get showing in the Audio Effects list also shows in the track drop down menus in the mixer.
Now getting plugins that work is a trick in itself. Generally the more complex and graphical ones do not. Even if PrPro recognizes them they don’t hold their settings.

I should add that there aren’t that many third party 64bit VST plugins that work well with PrPro. If you need to work with a lot of audio effects your best bet is to go the Audition route. Best way to do that is to lock your cut, take your audio to Audition for mixing and then bring your mixed stems back for output/export.

Another thing is I/O performance and stability. At the moment performance and stability with AJA, Blackmagic and Matrox is very poor.”
Tapio, AFAIK Apple has licensed prores encoding only to acquisition hardware companies (cameras, recorders etc). Both Premiere and Avid can read & edit prores files (Win and Mac) but only Mac versions of both can encode if they have FCP or Motion installed on their system.
In my experience stability in PrPro with third party hardware is solid. Problems with stability and performance are usually system configuration issues. Some complain, for instance, that they can only play a single stream of prores HQ. Others with the same hardware get 3 or 4. Personally I tend to avoid all QT variants like the plague because they’re 32bit and because Quicktime on Windows really is as painfully buggy as black flies in July.

I’m very sorry to hear that.
I met Ramsey once and corresponded with him on a problem that cropped up while using edit*. I’ve thought about him now and then over the years, knew he had gone to Sony and always smiled with the knowledge that their software would be much the better for his presence.
It’s a sad day for anyone who knew him, especially for those who used edit* because he was a pioneering lynchpin of the modern NLE.
