  • No disrespect intended but did you configure the deck TC settings correcctly? I can do assemble, inserts with frame accuracy onto D5 Decks no problem. If the TC settings are wrong then the deck will consistently edit in at the wrong point on the tape. I thought I was going mad, but had the luxury of 2 D5 decks to test with and it worked on the other one. The problem was traced back to a TC setting of 30 frames instead of 24 in the TC convert menu. This is with a Kona2, DVCPRO HD footage at 1080psf, 23.976.

  • you can have multiple timelines open at the same time, just pull the tab out of the Sequence viewer to have two side by side. There is no direct view source as you describe, but I don’t belive you need it, as you can easily select the section you want to copy in FCP by dragging a selection box or marking in and out and then command + C (copy) and then shift + V (paste) into the record sequence to insert paste the section you want there. With both sequences open, you are free to view both together… makes view source timeline a little redundant.

Both are great, stable and do the job well. It all depends on what exactly you want to do. Which HD/SD format, framerates you’ll work with, whether you need hardware up/down conversion…

You can always get a refurbished mac from the apple store with PCI-X, I think they are around $1649 now. I have a refurbished tower, runs very well…

IF you have motion use that, extremely clean rotation, just make sure anti alias is on in the project settings.

offline RT will give you realtime effects, plus any graphics you put on there are automatically resized to full when you recapture.

SPX has a nice NewsGamma setting which the SDX does not have, very nice!
