Since version cs4 photoshop can take advantage of open gl technology in order to display some features, depending on which computer you have your video card may or may not support open gl, if it doesn’t you can still work with photoshop, but some features such as flick panning or page rotation (if i’m not mistaken) won’t be available.
Newer computers normally have open gl enabled cards, chances are yours is one of them.

If your other work happens in other applications perhaps you can get away with it by adding a second monitor and leave photoshop to do its thing in the other one, eliminating the risk of clicking a photoshop window accidentally while batch processing.

I avoid using the laptop keyboard whenever I can, not only limits After Effects functionality, but also Photoshop Illustrator, Cinema 4D, etc.
However since having a extended keyboard around is not always a possibility I’ve found that having a numeric keyboard pretty much does the trick, I have a physical one (if that’s the appropriate term) and an app, running on my iPod touch.
Not as versatile as modifying shortcuts (still don’t understand why Afer affects is the only Adobe program that doesn’t allow this), but helpful.

Do you still have the raw image? You can add a temporary adjustment layer with the brightness at the max to see the edges more clearly.
If you don’t then I guess you’re stuck with drawing the edges to the best of your imagination.

It’s called bird’s eye view, actually it’s quite useful, but takes time to get used to it. Its default shortcut is H, if you’re holding it and release it; you need to change the shortcut to a different key.

As of cs5 there’s no way to do that, but your method is pretty good. CS5 (and cs4 I believe) lets you vary the opacity while in transform mode.

To silohuetting a shape to separate it from the background, for example a person, either with a path pr a mask.

Have you checked your color mode?

Magic wand, color range, blend if (RGB), blending modes, calculations and apply image comes to mind.

make the object white with the parts you want to be transparent black, then change its blending mode to screen, if you do it inverted (black/white) then choose multiply instead.
